Does anybody know what tuning Bobby Igano uses on his 7 string fry pan steel?..the tone of that fry pan is unbelievable..puts most pedal steels to shame as far as tone

Derrick and Cartwright..thank you for your rapid replies..Am I to understand that Bobby plays an 8 stringer..I thought I counted only seven strings but I could be wrong and Cartwright, do you mean the 7th string is tuned to Bb instead of C...I always thought the tune "SAND" was played in the B11th tuning. I stand amazed at the beautiful tone Bobby gets from his lap steel...does anybody know the brand of lap steel he plays?

Brad,
Bobby plays majority of the time with a 7 string Rickenbacker Frypan.

I've seen him use 8 string guitars on occasion, but he would always remove the low 8th string. His bottom 7th string is a Bb as I have noted which would give him a 7th chord on the bottom.
Tune the 7th string to a C# to get a higher pitched 7th chord as Jerry Byrd uses.

I've seen Bobby go through many steels, but would always revert back on stage to his favorite, the Rick Frypan.

For his signature tone, he has used the Roland Micro Cube for many years, but is currently using the smaller Roland Mobile Cube which he says sounds sweeter.

The beauty of the high G in Bobby's tuning makes string 1 to 4 just like a B11, so one could copy most of the licks for Sand in this tuning, but you will not have that beautiful 9th chords on the bottom that the B11th tuning is noted for.

Most players don't like the high G because, to their ears, it sounds thinny.

Many thanks Derrick, I think JB's tuning was from top to bottom E, C, A, G, E C# A.. giving him a C6th,A7th chord..he used many tunings but that's another subject. Both Bobby and Jerry seem to favor the Rick 7 string Frypan...I guess 7 strings is all you need to do the job..but you do need seven.

My "C6" tuning of choice is like Bobby's, but I have a G on the bottom string: (from low to high) - G Bb E G A C E G.
