Is anyone familiar with this tuning:

Low to high

A# C# E G# B E

Obviously it's based on the old E7, B D E G# B E.

I just got a couple old Oahu Publishing books and one had this tuning.

Yes, I have my 8 string Bottom to top E, G# B [C#] E, G# B, E. and my 6 string B,[C#] E, G#, B, E. notice I change the [A#] to a B. and drop that D to a [c#]So I did a little modification but I still refer to it as C# minor 7th.

F#9 tuning was used by Dick McIntire and is spelled the same way, EXCEPT string 2 should be C#, not B. Can you recheck your source to make sure?

Since this is an Andy Iona sheet, it is quite possible that he used a hybrid tuning of E and F# to make F#11, which is what is seen here. I have figured out a few of Andy's tunings and one was a strange version of E, which string 5 tuned to G# instead of B. He is also the composer of Sand and did some experimenting with B11. Perhaps F#11 was his precursor.

Yes, I'm always looking for old Hawaiian sheet music in various tunings from that era. Any help would be appreciated.

First, thank you for your website, Mike, it's been very informative.

Sure...it's from "Andy Iona's Folio of Hawaiian Songs No. 517", Oahu Pub. 1939 page 6, "Special Arrangement for Professionals" of "My rose of Waikiki" and on page 18 for "That Night in Waikiki".

The tuning is indeed A# C# E G# B E.

I did see your post on the tunings of Sol Hoopii, Dick McIntire and Bernie Kaai. It's not exactly the same tuning, which is why I asked.

Maybe so. The same book has several other tunings, low to high:

A low bass E A E A C# E (the usual), and every tune has a version in this tuning.

E7 - G# D E G# B E - one tune

I'm much more used to the B on the low string rather than the G#

What Iona calls "C#m7th-9 or C#m and E7 combination"

B D E G# C# E , with 4 tunes in this tuning.

I've used this tuning a lot , just raise the B string on the E7 tuning. Similar to the E B E G# C# E in many ways.

The C#m7 + 6, A# C# E G# B E, with 2 songs in this tuning.

Dm9th + 6, B D F A C E

C major - G C E G C E

one song each.

As you say, Iona was interested in tunings!

I used a C#m7 tuning on one of the necks on my T-8 Stringmaster. However, I added a C# to the 2nd top string: E C# B G#.

I've been using 8 string tunings with those pitches on the top strings.

Very useful and it makes a lot of sense to me.
