His obscure cuts are so raw and powerful! Another one:

Gary:

Not really obscure. Song was the "B" side of the 45 "Jukebox Charlie." It didn't make the cut for the lp of the same name.

The song Greg posted was recorded on a Decca 45 under the name "Donny Young" (his real name) as the "B" side in 1959.

Actually, Graham, his real name was Donald Lytle.

The cut I posted was from the 45 rpm in my dad's 7000+ record collection which we sold to help finance my son's college education. I've got a lot of them recorded from a Dual turntable before I sold them including Loretta Lynn's first records on the Zero label. Many were DJ only copies from Tommy Edward's Record Shop in Cleveland, OH.

The steel player on the last page looks a little like Doug Jernigan...

Great post, Frank.
Here's another Paycheck pic to add to the collection.

Barry....WOW! I'd like to hear some recordings of Johnny playing steel. With his ear and mind for country music, I figure he could really play some good fills behind a singer.

I saw Paycheck play steel behind George Jones on a show at Cleveland's Denison Theater and he was just awful. Out of tune and just not competent at all. Paycheck is my favorite country singer and he loves pedal steel guitar but he can't play it based on what I heard!

I did quite a few dates playing with Paycheck in the Little Darlin' years. I was friends with Dale Morris and played on the original demos of Don't Monkey with Another Monkey's Monkey and If I'm Gonna Sink. The singer on those demos was Lebb Brinson, whom Dale managed. Paycheck cut one of my songs, You Tell Me Your Troubles on the Wherever You Are LP. Since he was working single a lot of the time,he'd call me to put together a backing band when he came this way.

I've been blessed to have been able to pick with him, Johnny Paycheck. Not matter what shape he was in from drinking or ?,he sure would play great. That was at the BLUE ROOM, Imperial Inn after Hours Jam and Holiday Two Jam sessions. Many times. RIP Johnny.
