The design lines are quite futuristic for an 80+ year old instrument. A very important guitar in the history of electric instruments.

Apparently one of the designers of the Audiovox guitar, unbeknownst to his partner, sold the pickup's design to the Dobro company.

Art Stimpson designed the original pickup. I did a bit of a search to see if I could find an Art Stimpson patent for a pickup. I was looking to see if it was in any way similar to the Valco through string pickups we are familiar with.

According to OldFrets.com the pickup that Stimpson/Tutmarc sold to Dobro is patent 2,078,350. http://www.oldfrets.com/Valco/Catalogs/Patents/1934Pickup.pdf.

If I read it correctly it says that the patent has been assigned to Rodolph Dopyera.

It's a pretty strange looking pickup. But an interesting piece of history!

I've always been fond the styling of the Audiovox steels, and definitely a cool piece of history. For some time now I've thought of building a steel in that style.

Here is an Audiovox thread from awhile back http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=2064544
