Apparently one of the designers of the Audiovox guitar, unbeknownst to his partner, sold the pickup's design to the Dobro company.
Art Stimpson designed the original pickup. I did a bit of a search to see if I could find an Art Stimpson patent for a pickup. I was looking to see if it was in any way similar to the Valco through string pickups we are familiar with.
According to OldFrets.com the pickup that Stimpson/Tutmarc sold to Dobro is patent 2,078,350. http://www.oldfrets.com/Valco/Catalogs/Patents/1934Pickup.pdf.
If I read it correctly it says that the patent has been assigned to Rodolph Dopyera.
It's a pretty strange looking pickup. But an interesting piece of history! |
