I'm really liking the sound of this power amp made by Jay Ganz. Currently set up in the studio with an SMS Classic preamp into the Straight Ahead Amp into an original JBL D130. Very sweet.

Very nice Brad.
Not very good photo of mine but I also have Jay Ganz 500w mini power amp uising Sarno V8 and my own preamp *(black box) and the sound is great.
Other tube amp is 1 watt amp.

Jay. Ever considered changing the positions of the the input, power switch, output, volume knob, and power supply to be more like a typical rackmount unit? I'm thinking power switch, volume knob, and input on front; power supply and output on back.

The newer version has a different layout.

I didn't see this posting about Jay's nice power amplifier. I also own one of these little bad boys. Besides powering my Steel Guitar, and Guitar preamps, I have used it for other applications. I've taken the mono signal out of the board and ran two 8ohm monitors. I've also run two 18" 8ohm subwoofers with this amp. It never broke a sweat. I found this neat case at Walmart $4.00 to carry it in. The amp and power cord fits nicely. This amp runs quiet, and cool, and will put out as expected. Get one or two of these, they will come in handy.

| Just buy two for stereo! I have logged 6 gigs with mine so far, it's held up nicely. Next Saturday is the true test with a VERY LOUD newer country band. |

Im using this with a V8 preamp and love it.I like the fact that theres no tone controls to interfere or make things more complicated.Just the sound of your favorite preamp.
It also sounds really good with a Tech21 Blonde.
Just wanted to note as well that Jays customer service is outstanding. |

Rich....did you run the Tech 21 Blonde directly into the Ganz amp or into the V8 preamp?
To anyone...is a preamp necessary to use with the Ganz amp or can you run an amp simulator, like the Tech 21 Character Series (http://tech21nyc.com/products/sansamp/characterseries.html)? |

Hi Stephen I've run it both ways.The tech 21 straight into the amp for a nice fenderish clean or varying degrees of grit and in front of the V8 as an overdrive pedal.It gives you a lot of tonal control as an overdrive.I think the tech21 is very underrated especially for the price.I paid 100 used.I have it on my current pedal board as one of 2 overdrive options and as backup in case I needed to go direct.
And yes you would need some kind of preamp,but any amp simulator like the tech21 series or multi effects units like a POD etc function as a preamp.This amp is not made to color the sound so what you put in is what you get out.You could just plug your guitar straight into it and see if that works for you.
maybe putting an EQ and Reverb pedal in front.I don't think that would work for me but it depends what your specific needs are... |

Here is a pic of the Straight Ahead with a Joyo american Pre-amp which is a knock off of a Tech 21 Blonde about $40.oo new.
Also a picture of Jays amp with a cup of coffee. ^_^

I am very embarrassed to say that must amend my previous post on running the tech21 blonde straight into the amp.I had it running though my little yamaha mixer that i use for headphone practice and did not consider it was providing some additional gain.It does work well in front of the V8 for additioal EQ and or overdrive.
I tried just the two together last nite and The tech21 does not have enough juice to drive the power amp on its own unless you crank the gain into heavy metal land.
My apologies if i misled anyone.I was( and still am) very enthusiastic about this little amp and got a bit carried away.
Ken Im curious if the Joyko you have pictured works straight in? |

The newer version has improved input sensitivity resulting in better signal gain.

I'm curious to know if Ken runs his Joyo American straight into the Ganz power amp too.
Perhaps Jay can advise us too??
It's nice to know what one would need should the occasion arise for a situation where you needed more power that a 40W amp. |

Yes I run the Joyo American sound directly into the amp.
I have a delay reverb stomp pedal "Dispatch Master"
Into a Telonics 15 cab.
Very nice feather weight setup with massive sound. |

Just so that I understand. The Ganz Straight Ahead is a pure power amp. Is there a tube in it? I only ask because Jay posted that it does need ventilation.
