Anyone got a phaser pedal they like for PSG, especially C6?
I've been trying the "Donner True Bypass Pearl Tremor Pure Analog Phaser" but so far not found what I'm looking for on it. I'm used to the sound I get out of the onboard phaser in my Roland 80XL but would like to find that, or something close, in a pedal.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

Mutron Phasor. I hear they're being reissued. Or you can find an old one.
Here's a brief demo: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tivsay3qohQ _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Jack, IMO the Phase 90 wasn't thick enough. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Lane,
That's what I like about it, not overpowering. But to each their own! |

If you can find one, an original vintage Electro-Harmonix Small Stone might be what you're looking for. |

I remember Buddy Charlton using a Small Stone, at a show in Connecticut many years ago. I had one and I loved it, but, I loaned it to my son and never got it back. |

Like with so many effects, I'd say it depends on what you're using it for.
In my case, I found that I was only ever using a phasor when there was a 'phasey' song and so the guitar player also used one. In those cases, having two going at once ended up sounding like sonic mush. I found that if I use a slightly overdriven reso effect pedal (I use the Bradshaw/MXR.), it implies a phasor sound and sits with the phased guitar sound better.
In those ultra-rare times when I use one alone, I've been happy with the Akai Intelliphase. It's not a super-deep phase but one of the things I like is that is has a selectable touch sensitivity where the phase depth is controlled by your pick attack. (And if any of you are interested, I have an NIB spare that I'd be happy to sell.) |

Lucky Duck makes the "Nu-Tron", it is a clone of the old "Mu-Tron" and built with the same technology.
You can compare the sound on YouTube. |

I like the Maestro PS1A. They're a little big but not crazy expensive like a bi-phase.
Super cool video ad... https://youtu.be/mCI1Jb0Fqlo |

Thanks, everybody. Stu Shulman has offered me a DOD pedal as a birthday gift (ain't he kind?), so I'll be trying that one out soon and see if it does the trick for me.
Thanks again for all the other recommendations.

Yeah, the Small Stone! Lush, smooth, and thicker than the Phase 90.

Hi Jim, I used the MXR Phase 90 on all the Lightfoot sessions...that's the sound on The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, that sold over 2 million copies and was meant to be an album filler......not sure you can even get them anymore....I'm using the Benado Effects now...hope all is well...Ed. Ps heading to Nashville Friday for 6 days, got tickets for Timejumpers on Oct 31.... can't wait and see some oold friends and see the sites with my wife....take care.... www.thewesternswingauthority.com |

I have the Small Stone and the blue DOD Phasor. The DOD is subtle, drops your volume a bit (at least mine does....it's an old version. I know they've recently reissued the DOD).
Crank the DOD all the way and you have a nice Leslie-ish thing going on. Love it. Crank the Small Stone and it's a bit too much "wow-wow" sounding. Might be cool in correct context. |

I just hooked up my old Small Stone and also a mint condition vintage "script" Phase 90 that John Hughey gave me, and I gotta say, it's hard to beat the Phase 90. I've said for years that it's about the best phaser ever.
MXR Phase 90
The old ones sound smoother and warmer than the new standard ones. But they also say that these special new "script" reissues are quite good:

And these extra-special hand-wired ones are even better, pretty true to the vintage ones:

MXR is coming out with the Phase 95 that is a small 1/2 size pedal supposed to be the same as a phase 90. The Phase 90 is a benchmark pedal. |

A slightly more expensive way to take care of ALL your modulation needs is the Strymon Mobius. It has a wonderfull phaser + excellent leslie, chorus, flanger, tremolo and other sounds. Highly recommended. _________________ Olli Haavisto
