| The tuning keys on the backside have a tiney hole, Iam guessing this is for oil. If so what type. Thanks |

I've used Tri-Flow for years with good results.
Recently I tried Tri-Flow Dry. It's supposed to leave behind a thin layer of Teflon. So far it seems to be working fine... time will tell if it's as good as the regular

I have brought back to life dozens of vintage Kluson Deluxe tuners by thoroughly flushing with naptha (Ronsonol lighter fluid) until the fluid runs clear, and then injecting petroleum jelly (Vaseline) through the small hole in the stamped gear casing.
(It should go without saying that the tuners need to be removed from the instrument before servicing.) |

The original Kluson knobs were made from an unstable plastic, which is why many (if not most) of them have disintegrated by this point in time. These knobs from Stew-Mac are about as close as you're likely to find:

Originals on the BR-9 were probably white. Cream would look nice, too. I have successfully installed these buttons on dozens Kluson Deluxes. |

Like Jack said, tuner knobs from this era are notorious for crumbling. I couldn't tell you how many I've replaced. Very common repair. Replacements are available from Stew-Mac, and my local shop keeps All-Parts knobs in stock and those work well (and look right) too.

There is a way to "age" the white knobs, also.
It might be with vinegar, but I can't quite remember the process.
Maybe somebody can chime in. |
