What other pickup can drop right in to a GFI student model steel without disturbing anything.I realize that the other GFI II & III will probably fit but I wonder about other pickups.

I think any widemount pickups, but I'd call or email GFI to check.

I don't know if the GFI II fits or not but I had one in my Ultra - it had the tone of my Fender 400 with much more sustain. Great pickup!

I read somewhere, and see no reason to disbelieve it, that they're made by George L, and use the standard George L cases and baseplates.
I think that the normal steel pickups should drop right in, although I don't know about the Alumitone/Lace bass bars, since they're not built to our form factors.

| From what I understand from speaking to a very reliable source, the 'GFI II' pickup is actually a slightly modified George L 'E-66'..I recently installed an Alumitone 'Bassbar' in my Ultra and it was necessary to drill additional holes for the mounting screws. While the resulting clearance between the pickup and strings is very close to the recommended two quarter coin spacing (GFI guitars do not provide for pickup height adjustment), output can be slightly on the hot side. I am quite pleased with the tone however. |

Thanks guys. The output on mine is quite hot and I have it down as far as it'll go. If I pick lightly (which I'm learning to do) the tone is fine but the least extra pressure makes the pickup sound over driven.

You could put a resistor either in line with or across the pickup. I'm not sure which is better
