I was just wondering how many of you steel players use flat wound strings. I have quite a few instruments, and flatwounds cost twice as much. I don't change them often but I may consider going back to roundwound on some of my secondary steel guitars to save a few bucks.
thanks

GHS has nickel "rollerwound" sets and singles. A sort of middle of the road solution, for me anyways. |

On my lap steels, I use the "Scotty's" string sets from S.I.T.
They are labeled as SEMI-FLAT. (I don't know how much that differs from flatwound.)
They are not too expensive. The 6 string set runs $5.19 and the 8 string set runs $6.85 (from JustStrings.com)
I just checked the "Forum Store", and they don't seem to be available from b0b right now. _________________ Some songs I've written |

I am currently playing round wounds but I'm considering giving flats a shot. People describe the tone as "mellow" and "dark" which sounds appealing.
Dom, do you use Chromes? _________________ "Don't be mad honey, but I bought another one" |

Frank:
Yes I use D'addario Chromes flatwounds exclusively.
They are as smooth as glass! and I love the tone.
There is no wear on the bar either. (My BJS bar slides effortlessly on the strings with absolutely no noise.)
They are not cheap, and cost two to three times as much as regular strings.
I just changed strings on my 13 string lapsteel after almost a year. I played a gig today and the tone was a little bit brighter with the new ones, but they never go "dead" like roundwounds... _________________ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYG9cvwCPKuXpGofziPNieA/feed?activity_view=3 |

Thanks Dom, It think I'll order some up.
I mostly play 6 string so I'll only need three per guitar at the most... I could see were it would get pricey on your 13 string _________________ "Don't be mad honey, but I bought another one" |

I used flat wound strings when I first started, Daddario Chromes. Even though they were more quiet they didn't feel as smooth as a round wound string to me. I just like the sound of round wound better. My personal taste.
If I really want flat wounds all I have to is not change the wound string for a while and they will become flat wound from the bar sliding on them.
