| Hey what is everybody using these days when there is no amps aloud. You folks know what I'm talking about, casinos, certain stages and where ever.. I need to get something maybe an IPod? Whats the latest? Thanks in advance... Kevin |

I've used a Wet Reverb pedal into a Sarno Octal V8 preamp with XLR output. It works pretty good, but I still prefer to play through a Twin that is mic'd.

I use a Sarno V8 and I love it. I'm seeing Kemper modeling amps showing up on big stages also.

Kevin, I have a Sarno V8 preamp with the XLR option. I love it. I mostly use it with my DAW. Just add a reverb pedal you like and you are golden.

| I use Kemper...It's great for concert stage to coffee houses...it 'can' come with it's own 600 watt amp and it has tons of great f/x built in...all kinds of amp models included and you can make more...studios are using them to replace a storehouse of big amps...they are not cheap but considering what they replace and with lite weight and convenience.... |

It's not glamorous but I have used my Baggs paracoustic di straight into the pa a few times. They are cheap, built like tanks and sound surprisingly good.
I keep one with me because they are like a Swiss Army knife for solving stage sound disasters.
Might be an inexpensive way to go.

I've played in several situations without a amp. I have used a bunch of different pre amp and processors . The first time I used a Peavey Transtube Fex . The second one was Line 6 Pod pro . And the last time was a Digitech RP360XP I managed to get compliments each time on the sound. The trick is to make whatever your using sound like what you sound like with your amp . It takes some tweaking mind you but in the case of these three devices it worked out well. I would think that any pre amp device that has a clean tone setting with reverb and delay would be able to get you a good pedal steel sound. I know at one time several Nashville acts had their bands just using processors to keep stage volume down to nothing , one in particular I can remember was Dan Seals.

I use to use a Johnson J-Station a lot. It is a lot like a POD, but has better clean settings IMO.
It has just about everything you could want including Leslie and stereo out.
Has a good tuner also. I use to practice through mine, but got spoiled on the sound versus a single amp setup. There are some good You tube videos (Kid Charlamange); mostly guitar things but good pedal steel sounds are to be had. Very intuitive and easy to program. They are cheap these days also.

The Eleven Rack is a fantastic unit, and also a great direct input for recording. In Pro Tools it also hooks up via USB and you can tweak things on the screen.

The one time that I played with no amp, I did use my LTD but disconnected the speaker and used the booster out jack direct to mixer. We had separate monitor mixes so worked out just fine, in fact, I think my tone was better. Maybe since monitor had horns I could hear better. Didn't like it on fiddle though.

Thanks everybody... Johan, that thing looks killer but the $1399 is a bit steep for me... Christopher, the 11 racks are suppose to be cool, our buddy Bruce Button likes em... they look pretty involved and I might need to get a degree to use one. Would love a Sarno V8 too! Our buddy and great player Tom Wolverton uses one and loves it,.... Lefty the Johnson J Station looks very interesting .. Not sure but I have to get something soon... Love the help you get here!

Never used mine for steel. .. but I have some killer guitar preamps from the late 80s with recording outputs on them. .. the most notable is the Mesa Studio Preamp which I believe is used by PF... the clean channel is a Fender Deluxe circuit with the benefit of master volume, a post GEQ that you can pull 750Hz down amongst other freqs, has an on board short spring reverb and the rec and main line level outputs..
Paid 280 bucks for mine in road rash condition a decade ago... But it is a very great sounding clean channel on six string... and if you play six string. .. the gain channel is all Metallica. Lol. |

For those who own a Quilter Steelaire;
Just unscrew the head from the cab and take it to the gig?
Will it hurt to operate the head without a speaker attached, just using the XLR out? |

A Zoom G3 works for me, it has an XLR direct out for the PA, and sounds great.

Hmm... Doesn't anyone here use in ears? I have done a lot of playing in church's in the last couple of years. None of them allowed any amplifiers on stage.
I bought this...
I am curently working on a Christian artist CD and have used this only. All guitars, bass, and steel on my website that I recorded in the last year were recorded using this.
