I also started before I was ready.
The band asked " I heard you own a steel"
Me "yes, but I can't play it"
Band "you own one? "
Me " yes "
Band " you'll figure it out. You're hired."
I tried to tell the story to Jeff Newman, who cut me off early in my story. He said " Don't wait till you're ready, you'll never be ready"....
Sounds like some others had a similar conversation. The upside :
It pushed me through the door, and I learned a lot really quickly. I really loved it, cherished every moment. It really motivated me to get better. I wanted it badly.
Any Downside ?
I showed my ass to some large audiences, and to some sidemen I really respected. You needed to have some thick skin. Being a somewhat accomplished sideman on other gigs may have helped a bit .
Maybe shortly after when my peers would consider hiring a steel player, someone may have said about me " I heard him, he's not quite there yet.... The cool part was when many years later some one would hear you and compliment you for sticking with it, and how much you had improved. That's another good point about starting early. I left plenty of room for improvement ! |

Because people often do that.
Especially the people who will put something in the subject line of replies.
If you never use the subject line when you reply, you can't start a new thread by accident, since if you hit the wrong button, it won't let you post....

Well, Steve, I guess we can let you off with a warning this time, you seem to have a clean record before this... 
Believe me, I have made inadvertent dupes on other forums. Looked right at it, didn't see it, started mine....then had to get beat up (in good fun of course) by the "dupe police".

I've made that mistake myself, but I usually caught it before anyone responded.
If you accidentally hit "new post" it won't let you post without a subject line. So if you never put anything in the subject line when you reply, the notice that "I'm sorry, Dave, I can't let you do that" tells you that you clicked the wrong button.

I had been fooling with pedal steel on my own for about two years when I was thrust into gigging.
The only bands in my area at that time were gigging. There were no people who got together to jam. If I wanted to play steel, I had to gig.
That was about 34 years ago.
