What causes the icons to rearrange themselves, and is there a way to click them back to where they were without doing a system restore?

This can happen if you change display settings or snap to grid/unsnap (right click mouse) inadvertently.

System restore seems like over kill. Just drag em' back where you want them.

Unless I'm misinterpreting the question.

Icon re-positioning has happened to me on every version of Windows, from 3.11 onward. It always happens after I alter the screen size. It sometimes happens after I (or a Windows Update) update the display driver. It also always happens when I log into Safe Mode (rarely and more difficult in W10).

Some folks play games on their computers and those are famous for changing your screen size and/or DPI. The results after the game are often re-positioned icons.

I used to have a desktop program that memorized the icon positions and could recall them after a mystery reordering occurred. It probably still exists.

Maybe it was an update thing, I don't remember changing size position,or anything about icons. I have had this happen before on other systems,XP, 7, etc. I'll put em back, and start over. Sure would be nice if you could color the file icons so they could be easier found.

Thanks Bill

You can certainly customize folders (not shortcuts) for easy identification.

right click on a folder icon
click "properties"
click "customize"
click "change icon"

Off the top of my head I don't know of a way to customize file icons.

Good luck,

I found the icon saver program I mentioned in my earlier reply. It is called Iconoid, by SillySot. The last version released is 3.8.6, with no further updates planned (according to a notice on the bottom of the page).

All I can say Bill is try it and see if it works on your computer and current operating system.

Must have been a glitch somewhere. I've been using Win 10 for over a year and a half and other than changing screen resolution nothing has ever changed.

I recently built a new desktop and moved the OS drive from the old PC to the new PC. The old PC was using an AMD Radeon HD7770 video card. I'm using the Intel video in the i7 6700K CPU on the new system. The icons remained in the same position with the new PC.
