I'm using a 3 1/4" tone bar and it just feels a bit short in my hand. Thinking of having a 4" made.
Anyone using a 4" tone bar (or anything longer than 3 1/4")? |

I've been trying different bars to use on my 12-string. I have a 3 3/8" Michael Hillman bar - excellent but it's the longest one he makes. Wayne Johnson of Innovative Guitars http://innovativeguitars.com/ToneBars/Aluminum/Aluminum-Tonebar-1.html makes aluminum and stainless steel bars of any size - also excellent - I have a 3 3/4" aluminum, which is light and good for moving around the fretboard, and a 3 5/8" steel for fuller tone. Also have a 3 7/8" glass bar from Diamond Crystal - excellent, light like the aluminum. Anything longer than that would be too long for me. |

i've got a real nice solid marlen bar which hangs out on my living room practice emmons.
it's 7/8 by 3 and a half!
otherwise my main bar is a heavy dekley..1" by (it must be) a little over 3 1/4...don't have it out to check but i always use it for gigs and recording.
...and i'll never give up my standard emmons bar. |

Yes, 4 inch is my favorite size. Easy to hold onto and pick up. |

I used a George L 4" x 1" for years on my 12 string - the biggest bar I was aware of except for Sneaky Pete's monster bars. Around 8-10 years ago I heard of a 15/16ths bar so I tried a 15/16ths x 4" stainless from Jim Burden and have been using that ever since. I like longer bars because they're easy to slant, tip up and just generally steer around the strings. I can't get a good hold of what most guys call a standard 10 string bar - you know like 3/4" x 3 1/2" or something like that. I don't even like them for 8 string lap. A man's gotta have girth. |

I notice this is the non-pedal forum. The 4 inch bar is nice for 12 string pedal steel, but for non pedal with fewer strings I like something smaller like Shubb Pearse SP-1. |

I have contacted the bar maker and he's quite willing to make bars to personal preferences. Stefan prefers a Shub style bar which would probably require some welding to the round bar and I don't know if he can do that.
