I have my dad's old instruments and an amp from the fifties and older. A friend is helping get them into playing shape. I hav a SUPRO 6 string lap steel and a 1959 (I think)Fender 400 8 string 4 pedal steel.
What tuning should I start with and what strings would be appropriate for each guitar.Thank for your help. |

Hi Dennis -
I guess you don't know what tunings your dad used. Maybe there is a scrap of paper around that has his tunings?
Do you know what kind of music your dad played or liked?
Some tunings lend themselves to a particular style.
Hawaiian vs country vs bluesy.
I've been using this tuning lately, it lends itself to both styles pretty good, plays itself! for 8string E6 or C#min7 - Low to high: G#-B-C#-E-G#-B-C#-E.
What flavor music would you like to get out of the instruments? That would be a good start.
Cheers! _________________ Just 'cause I look stupid, don't mean I'm not. |

Thanks Bud. I don't know what tunings dad used. He played in church and played country music. His best instrument was mandolin so he was not focussed on just the steel guitars. He could play anything if he tried. I would play Hank Williams music on it if I could. Even though I have been around steel guitars I am only finding out how big the steel world is. I am amazed at all the tunings and theories and innovations. |
