Anyone ever heard of this guy ?
He claimed to be a member of George Jones band, showed up on my gig Friday, and sang a few songs.

Not sure if this is the place for it , but anyway......this guy, shows up at my gig Friday.

Bandleader all fired up about this guy , texting me pictures of both of his zillion dollar tour busses, hoping it will lead to future work. Whatever.....I'm not interested, and quite frankly, nobody of any stature is going to be at this bottom feeder tourist trap gig, wanting to sign up this very mid-level band for anything.

So , he shows up. Looks and sounds the part. Shows the band a tour schedule, and starts pressing the band to sign a contract, which he had in hand. Looks legit, money is $1500. A week per man. He hasn't heard the band, the band hasn't heard him. The "red flags" are flying.

I'm very skeptical, and I'm not interested in the deal . Before the gig , during the breaks, and after the gig, he and the bandleader are trying to sell me on the deal.

He gets on the band stand, and really struggles to get through a few very common, simple three chord songs.

Anybody have a similar experience ?

I'm sure we've all had the "stage happy" sit in pests, and we develop an ability to size them up and deal with them, but this guy took it to a whole new level.

The dates on his schedule had him booked to play the grand ol opry, fairs and festivals. Sad thing , I think he believed everything he was saying .

Even sadder, the bandleader was all in. Ambition is fine, until it blurs your judgement.

Usually the sit in pests over promote themselves, and usually under deliver, but this gig was like the gong show. We'd let anyone sing a tune, just for our own amusement.

If he has 2 zillion dollar tourist buses, how did he get them if he's looking to grab a bar band on the spur of the moment? I have zero experience with being in a band and it even smells fishy to me. Run, Forrest, run!

A quick Google search turns up nothing, which reeks of nutjob. One of my previous cover bands was offered a $250,000 recording contract at a gig at a Mexican restaurant once. I doubt if the guy could afford to pay for his drinks. Laughing

Yeah, I did a search on him before posting, and got nothing.

The guy looked to be in his late sixties, or older.

The really sad part is I think he believed what he was saying, even though it had to be 100% false. His sales pitch was very detailed, it made me think he had to have done this before, which is why I posted this.

Funny thing, his contract included drug testing. Maybe you had to test positive to take the gig.

Equally sad, the bandleader was all in with this guy, ready to ride this guys coat tails to fame and fortune.

Some people are really desperate to believe they are in the music business.

I was in a band while in the US Army. Ran into a guy, one day, who claimed to be Mel Taylor,(drummer for the Ventures.) I asked if his picture was on any of their albums, and he said he had one. Of course when I looked at the picture, you couldn't see the drummer's face. At a later date, I saw a real photo of Mel Taylor. No it wasn't him! I guess these phonies get a cheap thrill, out of pretending to be someone famous Rolling Eyes -Jake-

Sounds too good to be true if you do the math. An old guy, unknown and w/dubious talent, who's going to book a show for $10k to $12k (band + expense money) a week?

Yeah, riiiight. Rolling Eyes

I'm with you Donny.

I never believed it for a minute. The band leader kept pushing me to listen to this guy, Even as I politely said I wasn't interested.

It was like someone pestering you to attend an amway meeting or a timeshare presentation.

At the very least, " like most of the acts that hired me, he was a poor judge of talent"

I had to take urine test before I got a gig, but fortunately it was for "distance and accuracy."

I put out a candle at 15 feet and got the job. Of course, I was younger and my prostate was in far better shape.

There is some good wisdom in this statement.... and in a rather ironic way describes many of the people who actually are in it too.

One thing to tell your leader if he is really really buggin' out, in fear of walking away from his ship coming in and all, is to tell Uncle Money to book the band for one show. Pay you all off handsomely. Once he proves himself, then we'll talk.
There won't be anything to talk about after that but at least there won't be the lingering doubts about 'what if'.
And tell Uncle Money that the only pissing you will be doing is on his shoes. Contract negotiation goes both ways.

Every year or so I run into a guy like that. They are a sort of pre internet troll. Just like trolls they are pathetic, isolated lost souls looking for any kind of attention. They are harmless. At best mildly entertaining and at worst annoying.
