This is the Kate Smith show from 1952 with the GOO at that time. The whole show is good to me. About half way Hank Williams plays Cold Cold Heart when Don Helms has his a solo the guitar player next to him is playing a Bisby guitar. Anyone know who he is.

Not sure on your question regarding the Bigsby but is so often the case watching this clip has led to a new discovery as the next act after hank was Lonzo & Oscar with there comedic steel playing cousin Jody, great fun and makes you remember that behind the comedy is a good player.
Looked like some sort of harmony he was playing???
Thanks for the discovery.

Lee, near the end of the song Don has a short solo and to his left when they show him is a guitar player with what looks like a Bigsby 6 string guitar. I didn't think there was but a few made by him and was interested in who the player was. I don't think I had ever seen one played live before by anyone. Lucky to have even this in any condition I guess. We watched Kate Smith Show very week when I was a kid. |

sammy pruett? or how about a young grady martin? there is a name on the lower part of the pickguard...not clear enough to make it out. martin is pictured with williams in germany in 1949 playing a bigsby guitar. here is a promo pic of him. dont know what year this is.
here is the 49' pic in germany.

It might have been someone from the house band. Chet Atkins played guitar on the studio sessions around that time. |

I believe that's Billy Byrd on guitar. Perhaps the guitar is one of Grady Martin's, who is playing bass. |

Grady Martin owned that Bigsby until he traded it for his double neck standard guitar about five months after this television show. The next owner was Billy something, but not Billy Byrd. However, coincidentally, that looks like Billy Byrd playing the Hank Garland Bigsby. _________________ Chris Lucker

Ah crap, I really messed up! I didn't see the link in the original post and got all mixed up, thinking that photo from '49 was taken at some point during the '52 Kate Smith appearance. It's been a long time coming – I think I'm finally suffering a superfluous trivia meltdown. |

On some dates Hank would use the local musicians. When he played Sunset Park at times he would do this. He would carry Don and Jerry but other musicians might be used
on the road. Of course he had his band but I know this was done.

It's a long video. For those who don't want to listen to the entire thing, Don's instrumental comes in at about 11mins 30secs.
Of course, once you start listening it's so gripping you'll want to keep listening, and the following number is a great duet between Hank and Anita Carter, introduced by June Carter. |
