While you are at it, post your favorite Johnny Cox tune and let everyone hear how great he plays. I for one thinks he deserves more credit than he seems to get.
Congratulations on your upcoming marriage Johnny and a Happy New Year.

| Thanks, Roger. I took a week with Jeff Newman about 25 years ago (wow, time flies). Johnny stopped by for a little fun one afternoon and blew me away with his C6 playing...I never forgot it. |

In 1983 I went to Jeff Newman's June Jam at his school in Nashville. The show featured Buddy Emmons, Jeff, And Johnny Cox...three steels on stage with a great back up band! All three steel players sounded awesome. They would trade solos on steel instrumentals, each in his own style, and all sounding amazing. At one point Buddy played bass for Johnny. It was in a fairly small room and there wasn't a bad seat in the house! I recorded most of it on cassette and when I got home I had a hard time telling which player was playing what. They all sounded so good! Wish I still had that cassette tape...

Doug, that would be great if you could find that tape and let it be heard by the Forum.
I am looking for my copy of a CD Johnny Cox made about 12 or more years ago which I used to listen to every day while driving a Route for a Medical Lab. I still have it but have misplaced it.
The CD was comparable to "A Trip To The Country" by Roger Miller with Buddy Emmons on steel. I will post some of or all the tunes on the CD...when I find it! |

One of my favorite singers and is the blueprint for what I think a woman should look like and sings like an angel. She ought to be a regular on the Grand Ole Opry ! Johnny and I have been best pals for over 45 years. He is one of the absolute best to ever play the instrument. Johnny played great right from the start. He was born to play pedal steel guitar.

Tommy, I agree with you 100%. Johnny Cox was born to play steel guitar. I first saw him in the early 80's at St. Louis jamming with the house band at the end of talent night. He was driving the tour bus for Little River Band, they were in the audience enjoying the music along with several glasses of wine. 
The next time I saw Johnny was when he walked through the door as our new driver when I was with McBride & the Ride. I was mortified. When he left, I told the guys I wasn't worthy to hold his picks... 
Johnny and I became best of friends on that job. He taught me more about pedal steel in one year than most people learn about in a lifetime. It is a debt I will never be able to repay. Not only is he a phenomenal player, he is without a doubt one of the safest, smoothest bus drivers I ever encountered. And I'll share a little secret. He is one of the rare players who can jump on ANY copedent and in 5 minutes play it like it was his own personal guitar. Not many players share that distinction....

I met Johnny in 1971, when I worked at Little Roy Wiggins lower Broadway music store. Even at that young age he was great.

I thoroughly enjoyed Johnnie's playing in the very earliest incarnation of the Time Jumpers. He was playing the triple-neck Zum at the time.
He's surely one of the greats!

| Johnny Cox is definitely a great player! I saw him playing the triple-neck Zum in Saluda, SC at the Southern Steel Guitar Convention in November of 2002. He was a headliner at the show and played great that Sunday. My favorite singers at steel shows are Laney Hicks, Wendell Gurley, and Georgia singer/bass player, Sheri Dresser-Sheri does an amazing version of "Blue Bayou" |
