Which model?
Actually...doesn't sound good to me no matter what model. ..but the 3x1s were most often entry that level steels. |

If it's a Sidekick or Red Baron, it's worth just that.
If it's the Sidekick Pro-Am, it's a good deal.
If not the Pro-Am, additional levers can only be added with cleverness _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects |

I plan on changing it back to righty. It is not originally a lefty. It's in my budget for a boy toy and I don't mind working on it . Thanks _________________ Got time to breathe, got time for music

Bob
I perused your thread on the Multi-Kord, and now I see you want to toss money at a left-handed guitar of marginal value to somehow turn it into a right-handed guitar. Which, no offense intended, can be described as a fool's errand.
So my question is this: What skill level are you at as a player, and what IS your intention in seeking information about these anachronisms?
Is your intention to fiddle with basically obsolete steels to see if they can be somehow made playable by today's standards, exercising your skill as a tinkerer while you actually own a modern, professional-grade guitar that you regularly play?
Or are you a beginner who is looking for an inexpensive way to get a guitar that can play modern steel music?
If your situation is the latter one, I think your musical dog might do well to choose a different tree under which to bark. But of course, you may dance to a different drummer and if so, have at it and keep those of us in Forumland up to date on the project's progress. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Thanks for all the replies . Usually L have no rhyme or reason to all this stuff just bursts of what ifs.
I don't play PS at all ,lap steel some . I am a dulcimer maker/musician as a profession since 1981 and enjoy all things musical and tinkering. I will probably never be a serious steel player of any variety but seem to be semi crazy over the sound and the instruments. I am currently working on a six shooter pull release PSG build. I wont even mention the details on this forum as I will incur the wrath of many. I enjoy this forum and have had many positive experiences so far. _________________ Got time to breathe, got time for music

That was a good price for what it was, provided it wasn't messed up in conversion. Only having 3+1, it's a student (entry) model, of course, but that's certainly enough to learn the rudiments of pedal steel. |

since you're not a pedal steel player and really have no intentions of being one, i would just avoid them altogether. |

Actually I think I know what Bobs talking about. He likes the mechanical aspect of working on. Well Chris that's sort of like me quitting kayaking because I am not Olympic material. Playing steel is a hobby as are many other things in my life. I will probably never even play out with it but I will enjoy it. Realaxxxxxxxxxxxxx _________________ Got time to breathe, got time for music

I support your venture Bob and would add a couple of things.
In the description of the Sidekick, it's like a Red Baron--not fiberglas but a vacu-formed plastic that MSA played around with. I had one.
Those units have a lot of cabinet drop--pitch error when the pedals are depressed. It was actually depressing to play.
A wood cabinet like the one you're building would bring better results given the small limitations of a pull-release changer
Using the components from a Sidekick might be a good idea, but not one I'd undertake in order to have any time left over for playing.
Keep us posted, as Herb said. And I wouldn't fear the wrath of many on the forum, they're so few. |
