All the time I have been attempting to play a steel, I have been keeping my right hand firmly planted on the guitar. I watched a video moments ago. The players right hand appeared to be conducing an band. Excellent playing. Should i lighten up a bit?

I think it boils down to personal preference. Some players "anchor" more firmly or closely than others, but there are great players in both camps. The only thing I'd suggest to avoid is maintaining an excess distance that would require lots of hand movement to reconnect with the strings. Distance equals time, so excess right hand movement just slows you down.

This is from the thread on Gary Carter. Study his right hand closely, including how he wears his picks. You can't go wrong...

I was just thinking the same thing, Tom, and posted the tune on another thread, having watched it many times, hearing the clarity of his picking.

He's making contact with the pinky without anchoring the hand; his hands are relaxed and moving. Textbook stuff where there is no textbook.

Thumb extended and at the 20/21st fret, body centered on the 15th fret. Impeccable technique... And obviously in that Zum's sweets spot. Note that he only moves closer to the pickup when he needs the room. I should study his playing much more...
