Jazz guitarist George Van Eps mastery of all the elements of finger style standard guitar playing has amazed players for years. Harmonic Mechanisms For Guitar is his 3-volume tour de force of exercises for complete fretboard mastery.

This is complex stuff - all written in only standard notation. Much of it is instructive for steel guitarists if you can wade in these deep waters. I only own volume three and only gingerly dip a toe in there now and then. Here are some of Van Eps exercises from the book for C6th plus a few that Mike Neer posted a while back that I incorporated here. Free to download.

Man, I went through a good bit of those volumes on jazz guitar... It's hard enough to do that, I'm guessing (without having looked at your files yet, I will, though!) absolutely brutal on even pedal steel, super brutal on lap...

Needless to say, can't wait to try...

Glutton for this kind of punishment

Now that I've looked, these exercises are very playable

I was thinking of the first ones in Vol 1, where you hold a note while playing a scale. Some of those would be quite doable in all keys on pedal steel, probably doable on non pedal with certain tunings and in certain keys.

Sigh - Van Eps, master indeed
