Good thread Larry. Those are fabulous looking guitars and it's good of the guys to put the pics up and show them off.
Hey Larry, I sent to you on Nov 10th to your Mesa address that you gave me. My computer is out for upgrading but I hope to have it this weekend. I can receive on my wifes puter but cannot send.

My 1960 Quad has a standard-groove nut on the outer neck, not the regular nut for the baritone tuning. Was this installed per request of the original purchaser or swapped out later on? We'll never know, will we? I'm actually glad this is the case since I have my E13 tuning on that neck which in my opinion increases the utility of the guitar. In listening to the Leon McAuliffe recordings where he uses that low tuning, I feel it's a bit "flabby" sounding and wouldn't want it hogging a neck that can accommodate something more useful. Of the four necks, that top neck has the best sounding pickups; noticeably so. I've wondered if Fender didn't wind those pickups differently to suit a lower tuning; does anybody know if that was the case? |

Does it have the enlarged holes in the tuner shafts?
I tune the 4th neck to a regular tuning and the larger nut slots aren't a problem. |

Same size holes in the tuners as the other tuner pans. I'm glad you brought that up. It makes me think that the original owner probably wouldn't have swapped the nut and then go to the extent of acquiring a whole new set of tuners (extra expense and really not necessary). Maybe the guitar was delivered the way it is. |

I dug this thread up this morning...over 2 years old, but I am still drooling over the quads-I wont probably be ever happy until I own one _________________ Zum Encore, Remington D8 non pedal, Hallmark Mosrite clone, Gretsch 6120 DSW, Gretsch G5210T-P90 Electromatic Jet Two 90,1976 Ibanez L5, Eastman archtop, Taylor Dreadnaught, Telonics pedal, Squire Tele, Squire Strat, Fender Tonemaster, Gold Tone 5 string banjo, Little Wonder tenor banjo, 3 Roland cubes 30s and 80, Carvin combo bass amp |

Cool thread. As a prospective new owner of a late 50s T8 (when previously I was only planning on a D8 console...plans changed!) I was wondering what to do with that back neck. Then I happened on that Buddy Merrill video on youtube and the idea of a low-tuned neck seemed really interesting!
Now, I'll have to see when it arrives how the nut looks on that neck...but if it can accommodate larger strings, does anyone have any recommendations in terms of gauges? I like the idea of an octave down C6, preferably with flatwounds to get a real nice smooth tone and feel...
I keep calling it my "hotel neck" as I'm sure I'll be experimenting with different tunings on it, C6 and B11 will be more in permanent residence on the other ones... |

I bought a stripped long-scale quad off ebay a few months back, with the intention of having some project bodies to work with. I outfitted the inside neck with some reproduction hardware from Jimmie Hudson and I'll start a separate thread on that project. I have since acquired enough original hardware (and some more parts necks) to make a D8 with all Fender parts. I think the cost of rare long scale parts would make it prohibitive to make this back into a quad and I don't see myself toting a triple to gigs, much less a quad. Sorry, another one bites the dust.

Guess that's why Leon did a good bit of routing on the underside of his quads.

Pretty much anybody else would be significantly depreciating their guitar by doing that but I'd say he was justified. I doubt that he had a guitar tech to carry and set up his gear when he was touring heavily. |

On the few gigs I played my quad, the audience didn't seem to notice it much. The band members thought it was pretty cool though. I played it at a wedding, and there was a musician in the wedding party. During a break he came on stage and checked out my guitar. He said... "I walked around to the back of your steel guitar, and that thing is beautiful!" The most stunning view is from the player's position. All that chrome, 32 strings, 32 tuners, and those pushbuttons. Perfect for the 1950s! _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

Hi - Just noticed this thread. This is my quad. I put it away a few years ago because it was taking up to much space in my studio. It is all original and has the medium scale length for a stringmaster.

What the heck, here is my 54 long scale.
I scored it last Summer, was all original but with no legs and a somewhat sloppy bit of touch-up paint mostly around the edges. I swapped a few worn metal parts from some donor guitars and put in new pots and cap. Pickups all original and sounds great. The front of the guitar once had decal letters that said "DIANE".
I posted a lot about it here:

Hard to believe so much time has gotten away from me, but the restoration of the case is still a work in progress. |
