Friday night, a mic stand tipped over and dinged up the top chrome strip on my Zum. It is minimally noticeable, but nevertheless my first ding. Just curious what you all may be doing for a mic stand? Inherently, a mic on a boom stand is never an ideal situation when playing steel, but I'm not what the alternative is.

I like a boom stand with the old-fashioned heavy counterweight on the other end of the boom, and discs instead of tripods.
I oppose headsets because they nuke mic technique.
EDIT: I kinda like Larry's. Where did you get that from?

Lane..they are Atlas from the 80's...don't know if they are still made..I think the folkies used them to mic acoustic guitars ...I have used them on my steels for years and they are solid!..Larry

Here a link to Atlas' new model mic stand clamp. Doesn't look as well made as Larry's But it will probably work. Good idea!

I use this one...

Bought mine from Amazon for $20 plus change. Clamps to the right front leg just under the body of the guitar. I can rotate the boom away from me when not needed.

I like the looks of the one Scott posted. The other type shown work fine, but they'll definitely bugger the leg of the guitar where the screw digs into it. A person might fashion some sort of sleeve to prevent that, but stability could be sacrificed.

Someone on the forum was making these a few years ago - I forget who it was. I have an OnStage shock mount mic clip that reduces pedal noise to a minimum.

On the stand I posted, there is padded strips inside the clamp, as well as padded buttons on the ends of the screws. I have not noticed a mark on my steel legs at all.

Now, my legs are a different story...

I used a converted cymbal tripod stand with a boom and gooseneck. Worked well, rock solid.

BTW: I would never use a mic stand of any type without a goosneck in a bar situation. A drunk at some point will fall into the stage and a gooseneck will help save your teeth and face.

I do like the clip on the leg type..... May have to give one of those a try.
