The mission of the San Antonio Steel Guitar Association is to provide an opportunity for current and future steel players to meet, play, listen, and exchange ideas. Everyone is welcome, both pedal and non-pedal players alike, regardless of your skill level. www.facebook.com/satxsga

We also support the San Antonio Steel Guitar Association Self-Help Group, which is focused on players who are new to the steel guitar and would like to understand the basics, and move to the next level. The Self-Help Group meets every two weeks on Saturday mornings from 9:00 till 12:00. There is no charge and all steel players are welcome. For more information, contact Ben Price at 210.255.1816 or james_ben_price@hotmail.com.

This is a great effort. Too far for me but maybe around here somewhere in Arkansas or East OK we can follow your example.

Wayne - Thanks for the kind words. The Self-Help Group practically runs itself. We talk about all kinds of issues that beginners face. Things such as keeping the thing in tune, bar position, choice of finger picks, overuse of the A&B pedals, amps, practice strategies, etc. The students LOVE to share their success stories with the other students. Students bring their guitar and a practice amp and most of the session sees each student playing, with the others watching and asking questions or making comments.

Central to our philosophy is: Each player comes to the group with their own level of proficiency, and we work with whatever that level is.

For those out there considering setting up this type of learning environment, I would certainly encourage you to do so. As you know, learning the steel can be daunting, frustrating, intimidating, and just plain scary. However, there is simply no instrument that can match the pure beauty of sound as the steel guitar.
