I just bought a 1975 Emmons D-10 which is gorgeous...
Expertly set up by Jan Visser in the Netherlands, it plays really well and has THE sound...
I'll be putting new strings on it soon and would like to know if putting on a 017 instead of a 018 or a 036 instead of a 038 will throw the set up out of whack?
Or will a simple tuning of a few pedals be enough?
The PP is a totally new world to me mechanically. The tone has been in my head for 40 years, though.
Thanks! _________________ Olli Haavisto

No problem, probably a minor tune at most. You have a great steel... _________________ I need an Emmons! |

Any reason why you want to go with a lighter gauge on those two strings?
You will have to make a slight adjustment of each allen screw on the endplate. |

What Jay said. These guitars work best with the standard string size. _________________ I need an Emmons! |

Having interchangeable spare strings with my other guitars would be nice.... _________________ Olli Haavisto

I would suggest not changing string gauges. _________________ Bob |

I prefer the heavier strings, Buddy did too. |

I believe that quite a few of the E9 sets are now coming with the .017 and .036 as "standard". _________________ Lee, from South Texas - Down On The Rio Grande

it will work fine with whatever strings you put on it and adjust for. |

The rub is that the string guages affect the set up. Adjusting a PP can be pretty subtle. Timing the stops is an art form I am not good at.
I'm sort of lazy so once I get a PP so it feels good to me I don't change anything.
I just sold a PP to a buddy and am having it set up first. The guy doing the work needed to know the string guages where going to be consistent before starting. _________________ Bob |

Bob speaks the truth. Do you want your PP "close enough", or "just right". Your choice, Ollie. _________________ Best regards,

That's a beauty, Olli. Congratulations! As far as having interchangeable spare strings, you'll not likely need spare .36s or .38s as they virtually never break. Fifth strings do break occasionally, but it would not be a problem to have a couple of each in the pack-a-seat. But since you like the way it plays and sounds right now, I wouldn't change a thing. _________________ Drew Pierce

But not everyone wants to be a mechanic to enjoy driving their car, chris. Some people want a mechanic to adjust everything to perfection and then let the the owner race it around the track. Same goes for a PP.
And changing string gauges can involve more than just re-tuning a couple pulls.
I know you're very aware of all this, chris. _________________ Best regards,

Swapping out a .017 for an .018 or a .036 for a .038 shouldn't pose any problem greater than minor end plate tuner screw adjustment. Push pulls inherently must be set up with a bit of slack, so they're generally pretty forgiving.....especially when using slightly lighter strings. |

Thanks guys,
I think I'll get SIT Buddy Emmons Signature sets, they have the right gauges.
And a few 018 spares _________________ Olli Haavisto
