Mike, That is a beautiful guitar. That type of maple is referred to as figured or curly maple.

Yes, very beautiful guitar. That first string change, RKR - I don't believe I've ever seen that. I might give that a try to see what it sounds like.

I wonder if there is a song out there that features this change?
