How many of you have a pedal steel seat?

I used to use just any bar chair, then, I bought a ShoBud seat, which, I still have, but, it's very tired and worn out. I now use a Walker seat with a backrest. It's very comfortable and has plenty of storage. I would recommend a dedicated steel seat, any brand, to every steel player. It'll hold all your possibles and you can customize it to fit you correctly.

I made my own first. Then after years of use I bought one from Ken Rollins. Nice seat. I played out very little with the steel. Mostly Telecaster work. If I didn't have the seat I would build another or buy one.
Love the steel seat, with a backrest.

A steel seat is very important. You need to assume the same position each and every time you sit behind your steel. Just grabbing any old chair is wrong.
I progressed from an old Sho~Bud seat up to a Steeler's Choice with the side car, back rest and power strip.

the best invention ever for a working steel player!

i can't speak for someone who just plays at home.

i still use my first sho-bud seat after 35 or more years. it's compact, lighter than most, handy and comfortable.
so at $100 that's less than 3 dollars a year.

I'm a non-pedal (console) player and I used a drum throne for a while. Then I shelled out for a steel seat (with a back rest) and I haven't looked back. That thing's so much more comfortable for me. Kinda hard to store spare tubes in a drum throne. I get more compliments on that seat than on my guitars or, obviously, my playing! Mine's Joe Naylor's "lite" model from Steelseat.com. I haven't had any experience with seats from other sources, but I like this one.

I can't afford--and my playing cannot justify--shelling out for a custom seat which I would have to have, since I prefer a 23"-24" seat height. My $19 keyboard bench is even far too elegant and regal for the sounds perpetrated by its occupant, but it's the right height for playing. (And for tipping over when I reach for a dropped bar.)

I can't imagine gigging without a pack-a-seat. Carry a chair or throne around along with a separate box or bag for VP, efx pedal, cords, strings, picks, etc.? No thanks. I take three things to gigs: steel; amp; pack-a-seat.

After using a backless pack-a-seat at first, I went to a Steeler's Choice Easy Rider and will never be without it again. After about 20 years of use, I recently had the seat and back re-padded and re-upholstered at the factory. It's now like brand new.

GFI since 2000, after the Sho-Bud upholstery came apart. I do get comments about this, but I get more for my clamp-on drink holder. I tell people that I got that back in the '70s and I had to find something to clamp it to so I decided to play steel. Very Happy

David, I am basically just an "at home" player but after using one of the rather inexpensive but functional folding bench style seats I found that I needed back support if I was to stay seated at the steel for any length of time. I opted for one of Joe Naylor's (Steelseat.com) Lite models with back rest and the normal firm cushions that he uses in production and my back and rear has thanked me many times over. For a short playing stint the bench wasn't too bad, but I have not regretted for one minute spending the dollars for a quality built steel seat! If you can see your way to do it, take the plunge....your body will thank you. Also, from what I have seen used steel seats bring here on the forum; if you get one and then decide it's not a good decision, I think you can always count on getting the biggest part of your investment back should you decide to sell. I winged it using chairs in bars for about 5 years, then built a copy of the Sho-Bud seat in 1981 which I still have...have since bought an Ace and another seat...Being 6'8" and 255,a consistent seat height is important and both my steels have been significantly raised...
