Hey Earl,
IMHO, surgery is ALWAYS a LAST RESORT! Try every other option first! I have the same type of problem in my left ankle.

I reached that point of no return and had the surgery. I could walk better with the stitches than before the surgery. Much less pain, didn't even need pain pills that I was taking every 4 hours. It was well worth it to me.
