What would you purchase?

Consider that you were hoping...
-To gig with it in a couple years
-To not buy another PSG for at least 5 years
-To not have to invest alot in upkeep or repairs

You should be able to get into a Fessenden or Derby in an SD-10 model.

I'd stay away from starter steels even though the price might be attractive.

My 2 cents...

That Encore, or Justice Pro-Lite, Mullen Discovery.
Or if you want a double neck, the Carter on the Forum is hard to beat.

2k will get you nearly any s or sd10 on the used market. ..Even a universal can sometimes be had for that sum... which is what I would recommend. .. yes it has 2 more strings and 4 more pedals but theres no law stating you have to touch them until you are ready for the next step beyond E9.

You can also pick up D10s for 500 more in most used modern brands... and there is the occassional MSA D10 that floats under 2k and they are an excellent value.. sound good enough.... but where they shine is comfortable foot pedal shape... solid mechanics and smooth action.

New Mullen Discovery. Just a little over the $2000. but will last you a life time, and do anything you will ever need to do.

I would scrape together a couple more dollars and get a Justice Pro Lite made to order.

I'd look for a used MSA, as they're very reliable and easy to work on. There's one right now on eBay, a "buy it now" S10 3+4 for $1500. These are really good guitars for not a lot of money.

Fessenden
A used D-10 should be $2K or a bit more. A S-10 should be under 2K.

Wonderful sounding and playing guitars built by Jerry Fessenden, a great guy who stands behind his guitars. One of his guitars has been in my regular rotation for more than 15 years. Whenever I have a road gig, it's the guitar I pack. Easy to work on; easy to understand mechanically.

I cut and pasted this part from my post in another thread:

If you can personally try out used guitars you'll likely spend half as much [as new]... Pro is you buy immediately (if the shoe fits wear it). Con is you have to do some legwork to go try them out first. Other option is used guitars here on the forum. Pros are a high reliability factor when buying unseen and supporting the forum as well. Cons are the standard buyer beware caveat emptor.

Ive never been to a convention yet, but its been mentioned many times to prospective buyers here that attending one is a good way to try (and possibly buy) new steels, as well as just help to decide exactly what it is you're looking for.

I'd get a Justice S-10 3X4 and add the split tuning option.

I bought an Emmons Black Rock and I love it. However there were a lot of issues with it when I first bought it that definitely held me back on my development.

If I were to do it all over again, I'd probably start with a GFI Expo which is what Bobbe Seymour recommended to starters.

For the budget listed you could get a very dependable, great sounding guitar that you could learn on and eventually gig with.

Thanks for all the advice folks,
This was a spinoff of my earlier thread where my brother is buying me a pedal steel. He was in touch last night and it looks like he's settled on the Encore and I'm just happy to get it.

Fell free to keep up with the exercise and make more suggestions if you'd like though. I'm learning a lot looking at the various instruments mentioned.

You know. If you are really nice, Fred might drop the price on his guitar to $1894.50. Laughing

Fred is a really good guy. You won't regret dealing with him.

Karl, is this $2000 to be "gig ready" (guitar, amp, volume pedal, etc), or just the guitar? If you don't mind not having a factory new guitar, I got my 1977 MSA D-10 for really close to $2000, and I think they're still commonly found for around that much.

brand new Encore, and you'll have enough money left for a nice Peavey 112, seat, and a volume pedal...

If you are buying new, go with Damir's pick, the Encore:

from Doug's site:"ZumSteel Encore - for even more professional features starting at $1499
for three pedals and five knee levers. Fourth pedal is $80, detachable pad is $50."

I gig with one of Doug's Stage One steels and they are light, STABLE and sound great.

If buying second-hand do consider an MSA D-10 if weight is not a problem or perhaps a Fessenden.

Good luck to you whichever steel you choose. stevet
