Tonight I had the fortune of going to a casino in the Phoenix area where Mike Smith was playing with a George Strait tribute band. It was a great show and every musician was top notch. It was great to watch Mike play his Zum...he did an outstanding job on all of the songs...no surprise, of course, but it was nice to see him seem to enjoy himself so much. All of the musicians are living in the Phoenix area. If you get a chance to see this tribute show, it is well worth your time !

Right you are Larry.....this is an exceptional tribute band, and no one can fill the steel chair like Miguel....I know.
I second your motion that folks should go see this show...it is a great one!

Steve...
I don't know how old that video is, but Mike Smith is the current steel player.

The Troubadour Experience is a really fun show and I'm honored to be a small part it. Jack Smith was in the show from its' beginning and the morning Jack passed away, the founder and lead singer for the show called me (John Eric). He was a close friend of Jack's and was completely heartbroken, but the next night, the show had a week long run at the Riverside Casino on the main stage in Laughlin, NV and he needed someone to fill the position. Unfortunately, I was unavailable and so I gave John all the contacts I could for local players. John called later and said everyone was either working or out-of-town. I told him it might be a long shot, but my buddy Wayne Dahl might be available if he wasn't already on his move from Austin to Minnesota. The next day I got a text from Wayne while he was waiting for a connecting flight from LAX to Vegas where the band would pick him for the gig in Laughlin. Wayne literally just jumped into this show without any rehearsals and did an awesome job. I knew he would be great and they did offer him the gig and Wayne was considering relocating to Phoenix. But after some careful consideration, Wayne decided Minnesota was the best direction overall. The Troubadour Experience didn't have a full-time schedule so I agreed to do dates I was available for. It was a real challenge for me because they didn't just want the intros, turns and endings the same as the original recordings, they wanted every lick like the originals. There are a lot of great steel players on the 30+ original songs this show does but it gave me the opportunity to play the C6 neck more (about half of their song lists are on the back neck). Trying to be as true as possible to those recordings and those players is not an easy task, well...for me at least. You play in cover bands who play at lot of these songs so you think you know the material...not even close : ) It certainly has given me a refresher course in respect for what all those steel players did on George Strait's recordings. Although I can't make every Troubadour Experience concert, I totally enjoy those That I can. Here are the dates I know for sure I'll be on...
August
14 Payson, AZ / Matazal Casino / one show 8pm
15 Acoma, NM / Sky City Casino & Hotel / one show 8pm
November
7 Coachella (Palm Springs), CA / Spotlight 29 Casino / one show 8pm

Mike Smith is the Shizzle.......
If you really want to get a memorable experience, go to (Billy Easton's) Phoenix Steel Guitar show in Feb and you can meet Mike around that area. Or,you may be lucky enough to see him at the show. One of my favorite shows to go to with jam up players.
Mike is not only one of the great players around, but a sincere/nice guy.
Thanks Mike.....for the great experience! _________________ Traveler, Peddler and Extreme life lover. Giving up is not an option. |
