I need to get the wiring all squared away, and then I'll let you know how she sounds...

Anyone recognize anything about this instrument?

Very cool looking guitar - except it looks like somebody shook out their rug before the lacquer dried! I'm usually in favor of not refinishing but this one might be an exception, especially with that beautiful wood. What's that extra slab of wood in the case? A neck riser? A dulcimer fretboard?

I'd too be tempted to give it a bit of a refurbish. Hard to tell from just pics, but if I had to guess, that finish looks like it could be shellac. An old varnish or lacquer should look more amber and less orange. What throws me though is shellac dries super quick, so if brushed on, I'd expect to see brush marks. It could be sprayed, but in either case, it dries so fast that I'd not expect it would have enough time for so much dust / gravel to settle on the wet finish.

Yep...
I picked it up a few years ago at Steel Guitars of North County, for not a lot of $$...
I had forgotten about it, and now am trying to bring it back to life...

I think a good rub-out will do the trick, making the places where the case stuck to the finish "wear marks"...
Should be OK...

You're gonna love this...
It's some sort of homemade guide to the fretboard...
The slats slide so that you can line them up according to the tuning...
Folk art...

Can someone date this from the 15 cent price, or ??...

dont ever change one thing about that guitar. it is perfect. the wooden fretboard guide is priceless! do each of the 6 wooden inserts move?? if so, you can detune a string for a different tuning and slide the strip to match. amazing if this is correct.

Yep, each strip moves...
You can't really fit it under the strings if you move a slat, which is how I thought it was supposed to work...

The pickup is what interests me...
Never seen one like this before, so I'm assuming it's built from scratch...
I'm going to rip this apart soon, and will post pics if I see anything interesting....

Under the pickup cover...
Didn't want to unscrew the pickup to see what's under there, but will have to when I rewire it, I guess...

Lousy pics of the shot wiring...
