Topic: Steels with 4+ raises? |

My beloved pre-RP Mullen D12, capable of 3 raises/2 lowers, is maxed out on strings 1 and 5, with 4 raises now with the help of 2 Tom Bradshaw pull-add gizmos, but pedal action is suffering pretty badly now. I use those compensator raises to keep my chords in more-perfect tune, and I'm reluctant to remove them.
So I conclude my next steel should be capable of at least 4 raises and 3 lowers. I believe Excel steels can do that, and late model Carters or Magnums had 4R/2L, I believe, but that 2 lower limit won't suit me.
Any other brands you folks know of that I should consider? I'm looking to get an S-12, or SD-12 extended E9, with at least 4 pedals and a boatload of knee levers (Mullen is 9+10).
Tone is also crucial.

Talk to Kyle. MSA ain't gone under. Pretty sure your best bets are Fuzzy and Kyle.

Hi John. All the new (post 2000) MSA guitars have 4 raises, 3 lowers, and split screws.
They no longer make the Millennium, but they do offer a D-12.

Is this known to be true for a pre-RP Mullen D12? I have an MSA S12 universal and I'd be surprised if it could ever be reliably tuned to pure ET for all pulls. |

Les, compensators are NOT generally for cabinet drop, but to true non-consonant chords.
So yes, it IS true that ET will prevent the need for compensators.

I realize I don't get out much, but I didn't know there was a special tuning just to play "Waltz Across Texas".
Does it wotk for "Half A Mind" too?

Are you sure about that? When I was offered an opportunity to work for them in the early 2000s, they said they wouldn't hold me to playing one because they didn't make a D-12. I have yet to see one, other than the older models from the 70s and maybe 80s. |

I know my Mullen and BMI SD-12 with Zane's Becks tuning will do it. Might try a 14 with Julian Tharpes tuning.
