Guys,
I see a lot of y'all on youtube playing to your tracks and I am wanting
to setup the same here at home.
I'm seeking some opinions of the best but economical gear I need.
I do have an iPad if that helps, and a GD Walker rig with an AUX input,
but curious what you guys like, something simple that lets me play to my tracks
and record along with the tracks when the inspiration hits me.
It looks like some of y'all have simple cassette players all the way up to laptops and mixers.
I want to keep it simple but quality.

Hi John, on the back of the Walker S/S amp there are 2 RCA
jacks. The controls for these are on the right front of the amp.
You can plug a tape deck, CD player or mp3 player in the jacks
and have separate volume controls for your steel and the tracks.
I ran the RCA jacks to a 1/8" jack & plug a portable mp3 player
into it. This is really nice for practice or being a one piece band.
It also works great for quiet practicing using head phones.

John, if you’re using iPad, you may have Garageband already on it, but I’m not sure...
I use a Macbook Air with Garageband and just drag the track in from iTunes so it has a track all to its self, and than I’m able to record the steel on a separate track with the ability to edit volume and eq on it...you can also drag video into it as well if your well versed enough...I’m still trying to learn the editing and eq’ing...
This link will take you directly to my YouTube Personal Recording Playlist, where you can get an idea what it sounds like, with very little knowledge I might add...I’m still recording with a mic and wet through a Profex ll as well...but this is what I got.

For recording, all you need is a cheap video cam, a tablet, phone, iPad
or anything that records video and audio. There are lots cheap items
that will do the job for you. I have pro equipment, but I usually use
my little Kodak Xi8 for what ever videos I put on YouTube. Works well.

Yup and Yup...there’s a bit of a learning curve, and I’m still on the upslope, but yes you can drag tracks or maybe copy and paste as well directly into Garageband...add an additional track for your steel and mic your amp into an audio interface of your choice into Garageband...I’m using a Presonus Firestudio Project.

Hello John,
for recording purposes I am using a Zoom R8 recorder. It is a small, but very useful tool to create your own music, and after a few trials very easy to handle. It works great recording a backtrack from a CD player or a Computer on the first two tracks, and leaving the other six tracks for your own playing. Besides just re-
cording, you can add effects, and create a master track to put on a CD. I don`t know who is selling this item in the US, or what it will cost you, but if you chek in the internet, I am sure you will find a dealer close to you. If you want some further information, just let me know.

I just want to be able to easily play my backtracks, then when I think

John, that’s exactly what you can do with Garageband... Backing track on track 1...steel on track 2... play with track one till you think you’ve got it and then arm track 2 and record the the steel as track 1 is playing... if you muff a spot you can easily make multiple passes on track 2 and it will store all of them for you to review and edit if need be... If you’re just wanting to play with the track, or just a certain section of the track, you’re only two clicks away from looping that section so you can work on trouble area’s or even for re-recording area’s that need some extra attention.

OK, so I tried to record this song using the simplest method I have.
It was recorded line-in into a Boss Micro-BR, a little back-pocket sized
4 track recorder worth about $50. The effects were built in and I couldn't
figure out much about using or altering them.
If you have time give this a listen, please ignore my playing as I am still
working on the song, but tell me what you think about this recording method
and please offer any advice you have on improving the recording quality.
OK, you can pick on my playing too if you like, I can take it.

John for still “Working on the songâ€, you sound like you’ve got a pretty good handle on it... I liked it!!.. I might say a little more presence with the steel, but maybe that’s just me... If I get a chance I’ll listen to it again through my monitors, which will be a better indicator, but until then, I thought you did a fine job... really liked the track you used too... where’d you get it, and do you have an extra one, I’d love it 
And remember, this being your first try at this, you’ll only get better at it, and the more mistakes you make along the way, the better versed you’ll become at recording and the little in’s and outs and idiosyncrasies involved... but learning is fun right

Full disclosure, I'm terrible at recording and just wanted something simple to do what you are talking about.
I bought an Apogee One a few years back which is just awesome. I used it for years to get guitar ideas down.
I finally figured out how to use it for pedal steel with some help on this forum and to my ears its good enough.
I just plug in direct to the Apogee one, I use an amp in garage band, drop in a jam track and play along with it.
This allows me to listen back to my technique and my practice over an actual track. A great way to work on intonation, and playing in time as well.
If you are looking for a low cost way to have an easy recording device that's my .02. |

There’s a lot of stuff on YouTube...Garageband and Beyond is a good one, though I’m not sure about the iPad part... If it’s just Garageband that’s giving you a problem, you may want to look there... There’s a learning curve to all this stuff, and sometimes some of us/me take awhile to just get to the curvy part... If you have an issue that I might be able to help you with, PM or email me and I’ll see if I can figure it out.
