All right, Bill! Just what I was looking for.
I guess he cut his teeth on melody playing then.
Let It Be, pretty nice. Electronic organ, very nice with the steel. I'll bet he was grinning a lot.
Love it, thanks. _________________ Those that say don't know; those that know don't say.--Buddy Emmons |

Here's a Paul Siebel tune called Nervous that didn't make it to the original 1971 LP Jack-Knife Gypsy, but was included as a bonus track when it was reissued in 2004. Sounds like Buddy was having a blast...

Hey Ernie, thanks for sharing that Siebel/Emmons rarity. The outro reminds me so much of Buddy's playing on "Suite Steel." It sent me scurrying to my steel. |

[quote="robert kramer"]Mr. Bill Ford - "Mancini Country" (1970) was cut with Lloyd Green. There's a long told story from those sessions. They were cutting the song "Phone Call to the Past" and Grady Martin was playing so good - Mancini got up from behind the board - walked in the studio and said to Grady: "Mr. Martin - that's the best electric guitar sound I've ever heard."
"Phone Call From the Past"
Robert, My bad,You are correct, I had this LP confused with
"Country Gentleman" (1974), BE did the steel on this one....my apologies. _________________ Bill Ford S12 CLR, S12 Lamar keyless, Misc amps&toys Sharp Covers

Bill Ford - No need to apologize to me. It's just music. The Steel Guitar Forum is just a bunch of steel players backstage between shows talking steel guitar. |

Great story, Robert!
And that guitar solo is exquisite - I wonder if Grady read it or just made it up.
I had a conversation with Buddy many years ago during which te told me of being booked for one of Mancini's sessions and having to confess that he didn't read music. It all worked out fine with Henry demonstrating the required lines on the piano, apparently.
Maybe the 'Big E' actually stands for the 'Big Ears'! _________________ Roger Rettig - Emmons D10s, Quilter TT-12, B-bender Teles and old Martins.

Does somebody know on which record by Dewitt Scott the bass was played by Buddy? I'm pretty sure I held it in my hands once and read his name in the credits. I still regret not buying it! _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

The full episode of the January 12, 1971 HeeHaw Show with Buddy Emmons playing both bass and later in the show the ShoBud Professional as has been previously discussed, is on YouTube again. Buddy playing steel can be found at 40:00:

Buddy played bass on the Joaquin Murphey LP that Scotty released.
Other personnel: Terry Bethel, Leon Rhodes, Bunky Keels, and Jerry Kroon (drums). |

Ray Charles, Henry Mancini, etc. are all well and good, but I can't believe you're ignoring Emmons' groundbreaking work on Tiny Tim's Second Album! Actually he takes a real nice short solo at 1:35 of this one. Classic P/P tone.

.. to the original question.
I saw Roger Miller at the Dripping Springs Reunion in 1972. There was no steel and Thumbs Carlisle was playing guitar. He did an extended version of "Yakety Axe". I knew I recognized the bass player, but didn't realize it was Buddy until they introduced him.
I remember Charlie Walker didn't have a steel player there either. All his leads were done on a guitar with tremelo.

I don't know if you posted another version of the edited song, Peter. On this one you can here Buddy in the foreground:

Roger Miller teamed with Andy Williams on college tours in the late 60s and early 70s. They carried a large orchestra that used Mancini,s name but he was not on the tour. Anyone remember one of these shows? |
