A beautiful pair of instruments Darvin. You must have shares in Peavey with all of those amps. Which is your favourite steel amp?

Ken, most of those Peavey's are gone now, they had a bad habit of getting heavier as they got older, or maybe as I got older. Smile I'm into lightweight stuff now, like the GK MB200, or other various class D amps, and a lightweight cabinet with a 12" NEO speaker. My favorites of all of the Peaveys were an LTD400 I bought new in 1980, and a mid '70s Session 400 that Brad Sarno worked his magic on. I think the best sound I ever got with a steel though was with a '75 white mica Emmons push/pull and the '68 Fender Twin you can barely see to the right of my steel seat. It had been "blackfaced" and had a 15" JBL speaker, and had an amazing tone. It weighed 85 lbs. though so I never moved it out of the studio.

Cheers Paddy mate. Glad you got back to Kiwi land OK. Yes I couldn't be happier with Mark's work, and the guitar is going to look really pretty when it's finished. I have had a couple of doses more of your CD since getting back home. Laughing

Thanks Mike. I thought that my aging Zum would have new life breathed into it with a new cabinet. Now that Bruce is no longer making these legendary guitars, I want to keep mine in tip top condition. They should hold their value well.

i wouldn't call it a legendary zum at that point, having a different body and a telonics pickup.
i think it will be different and therefore have the value of what it has become.

oh...can we see a picture of it now?
just realized it's 6 months later!

Mark Giles made a number of custom bodies for Bruce. I would say that those guitars would be as legendary as the ones that have the Zumsteg bodies.

I have had a busy year this year, and work hasn't really commenced on the changeover. Will certainly post a pic when it is completed.

OK - work is underway, so I will put up some pics in chronological order. I will start with the guitar in its original format. The mica was coming away from the body in many places, but as Bruce Z said to me -"It's an old guitar now, so it is to be expected". Exactly.

First the tuner heads removed and polished.

Next the parts I'm most ashamed of - the changer assemblies. Very dusty and dirty.

Changer fingers before and after cleaning.

Some of the changer rollers were slightly grooved.

These have been polished out.

As I mentioned before, my friend Dave Wheelhouse - maker of the extraordinary Sheffield steel guitars - is doing the specialised work of transferring the innards and top components from the old body to the new one. He hit one or two hitches immediately.

1. The front apron on the original body is wider than the new one. That has been overcome by the placement of two rails to mount the pedal pull rod hook assembly and pedal stops.

2. The bronze bushes for the cross shafts were mounted directly into the wood of the aprons on the old body. These were gently teased out undamaged and placed into the new rails.

3. The holes for the changer assembly were slightly too small, so Dave routed them out to the correct size.

Overall with a bit of fettling, the transfer has started to make great strides. Here are initial photos of the body with the polished top components lying in place.

The original body had the normal Zum switch plate between the necks, comprising of two selector switches and a tone pot. I have decided to go with a single mini DPDT switch mounted on a smaller polished mounting plate.

Here is the guitar with the top parts bolted down and the two Telonics pickups that I bought especially for the guitar. A 409 on the E9 neck and a 206 on the rear neck. She is starting to look great already.

A couple of shots under her skirt. My left knee right has been moved rightwards slightly, as I have very big thighs and knees. Dave has really motored on with the job in the last week, and is as excited as I am about the project. He says that he has learned a lot since starting the work, and although his own guitar is probably over-engineered in comparison to this guitar, he tips his hat in acknowledgement of Bruce's work some 36 years ago as my guitar was built in 1980.

Thank you Chris.

Now it's really getting exciting. The pull rods go in next, and then she gets a set of strings on each neck and it's set up time. 4 absolute geniuses have their stamp on this guitar. Mr Bruce Zumsteg - who I know has a quiet lurk on here sometimes - built a great guitar in the first place. Mark Giles typically built a wonderful cabinet with only the endplates to work from. Dave Beaty's extraordinary pickups will help give the guitar the tone that I want. Finally, Dave Wheelhouse has worked his socks off on all of this. I knew that it would be a job and a half, but his expertise and lateral thinking has overcome any small teething problems.

I will put some pics of the finished article once the guitar is finished, which should be in the next 2 weeks. I hope this has been of interest to some of you.

Yes Ken it is of great interest to me. My 1981 Zum D10 is exactly the same wood grain mica as yours was initially and it has always been in the back of my mind to do a new cabinet as I would rather have any other colour than it is now.

I recently added two levers to bump it to seven and it is rather crowded underneath. It scares me a little but I think I could manage it. There are a number of major projects ahead of it and I would also like to investigate the use of some of our local hardwoods, eg gidgee.

All the best and I'm sure you'll post some pictures upon completion.

I don't know the total cost at the moment. To be honest, I am not bothered about the cost. I wanted to get the guitar up to the level of a new guitar, and as it stands it is as close to a new guitar as it could be. I bought the original guitar as a third owner. It first belonged to Tom (TC) Furlong, and then to Billy Murdoch. It was in reasonably good condition, the failing mica finish aside - the pedal bar was marked in a few places. It has turned out better than I envisaged when I first mooted the idea with Mark (Giles).
