How do you know it works great if you never used it?

If Ken Fox says it works, it works!
Good enough for me.

Pay Pal sent,
Thanks, Ken.

Darrell, please give us a review of this pre-amp, always been curious how it works with pedal steel. Thanks, buddy.

John,

I had not considered this preamp for steel. I have several other high end units I use to record steel, but it would be interesting to see how it compares.

I bought the ART to sweeten up a mic I use for live performance.

I'll post a review.

Darrell

Thanks, Darrell. I'm hoping to get an A/B comparison to the Sarno Black Box from someone.

I've got several of these laying around. I used to use them for Mic preamps when I first setup my computer based recording studio. I no longer use them as I've moved to different tube based mic preamps.

These are the typical "starved plate" (Low voltage) operation types. They are not true tube amplifiers. In a starved plate the tube is basically just a buffer.

I tried one for a preamp and didn't like it with the 12AX7. I tried a 12AU7 and a 12AT7 which are lower gain and still didn't like it, compared to a "real" tube preamp.

After the ART preamps, I tried a Presonus dual "Blue Tube" preamp. As it turned out it was also a starved plate design and really didn't do much for either a mic or instrument. I'm now using an ART PRO MPA II dual preamp and the 12AX7 tubes in this will operate as a true preamp with high voltage.

John,

I don't think the ART would compare at all to the Sarno Black Box. I have several different preamps in my studio, and I like the Revelation PreAmp made by Brad Sarno for steel.

The other preamps I have are the Universal Audio LA610. It takes 2 of them to record stereo. I also have the Peavey VMP2. It is an amazing preamp for steel, but hard to find one.
