I believe (and it sounds like) it is Sonny Curtis, same as on the recording.

Great video. I've never seen Sonny play anything but a ZB and Clark. He's such a great player.

No. A-11 is the one Little Darlin cut that is not Lloyd Green. It is the Jones Boys with Sonny Curtis.

It was the Jones Boys with a studio guy on bass. Paycheck was the bass player in the Jones Boys in those days. The song was recorded at the RCA studio in New York City. There was a man named Aubery Mayhugh that was Paycheck's manager. Mayhugh was trying to help Paycheck get a solo career going. He had connections with some people at RCA and was able to book studio time. George and the band were in New York to do the Jimmy Dean Show (it was one of the first network tv shows to feature country music acts). So Mayhugh used the Jones boys on the record and since Paycheck was the singer, he hired a studio player to play bass.

That pedal steel sounds exactly like a pedal steel should have sounded in the mid 60's.. THAT is the sound I love, and the only time I hear it these days is on old recordings...
btw, interesting bass Johnny is playing.. I have seen Teiscos that looked similar, but wow that headstock looks a like something made by Paul Bigsby.. i wonder if that is an electric bass guitar from bigsby??.. If so, I can only imagine what its worth... bob

Looks like that bass is worth something less than $678 as of right now. Killer seeing Paycheck playing a Teisco. Sorta like Link Wray playing "off"brands like Danelectro, Supro and Yamaha. Genius!

i think it probably had less to do with his 'genius' and more to do with his 'paycheck'.

Sonny use of pedals are the reverse of what everyone else uses. He has an A6th tuning. Pedals down makes the open chord an E major. You can see it in the video.

That's good info. What a trip. He's one of my favorite steel players and trying to cop his vibe from the records is kind of tough. He was so good behind the singers. The Musicor years with George are hard to beat for steel.

Daniel, I agree. It seems so backward to me to use the E9th system in this way. Coming off the AB pedals to get the same raise really messes with my head. Sonny explained it to me at a Chubby Howard show. He w a s using an Emmons LeGrande with two Randall amps playing possum tunes.Best tone in the room. I believe a mister Hangar used the same system that was a twist of the PSG evolution. Hangar.
