There was a thread some years back, in which my father told someone that he had a picture of sneaky pete from back in 1956 but didn't know how to post it. Well, since that time I have found the picture and decided to post it for him. Miss you Dad 
The back of the picture states as follows:
W.J.V.A Radio Station 1956 or WJUA can't tell,not sure if in Mishawaka or South Bend.
Lee Haze- Singer
Sneaky Pete- Steel Guitar
John Harbison- Gretsch Guitar
Far right ??? no name
Check out that four neck Fender

We all have our heroes; Pete was mine, and here he is as a 'kid' on a quad. Love the picture.
I corresponded with Anita Kleinow some while back about Pete's work. Still, there's little history I know.
Are you family, Jeffrey? What memories you must have. |

Very cool. Thanks for sharing that. It's the only time I've ever seen Pete on any other guitar other than his 400.
He would have been just Pete back then, since the "Sneaky" moniker was given to him by Gene Davis in the '60's, while he was in SoCal. |

Yes Charlie, I am of some steel guitar family, just not family to Mr. Pete. I believe that's the only photo I have of Pete as well

In the book "Desperados-The Roots of Country Rock" Sneaky is quoted as follows: "When I first came out to California in the early fifties I got a job at the Bostonia Ballroom, which was the showcase for Smokey Rogers and the Western Caravan. Everybody in the group had a silly hillbilly or cowboy nickname. I was obviously Sneaky Pete. And I hated that name for years, until I got into the recording business and discovered it was an asset. People could remember it."
So, the photograph annotated as "Sneaky Pete" in 1956, seems to jive with what he said in the book, and he picked up that moniker in the early fifties. |

Many many years ago when I was living and playing in NJ a fellow pedal steel player and I were discussing steel guitarists.. I recall i was gushing about the country rock guys and my friend was more partial to the classic greats Emmons, Chalker,Green etc.. I was poo pooing them a bit, talking about the "new" sound etc.. My friend said something like this to me.. "well Sneaky Pete is old school"... I guess he was right... bob

Somewhere in the forum archives, Mr. Emmons listed his top 10 favorite pedal steel players. Sneaky is on that list along with Green, Crawford, Hughey, Chalker, etc. 'Nuff said.
