Well here I am again. Last month I sent my PSG to Vic for some repairs. To make a long story short, my steel was damgaged in shipping. Fedex was the shipper. Vic was good enough to take pictures of the guitar and case. I sent them to Fedex by way of the service that took care of shipping.
My question is, how should I proceed from here? I've heard from others that they will probably deny the claim. I insured it for $1500.

One technical point : FedEx was carrier, you were the shipper.
What kind of damages were done?
Did you pack it, or did the agent? Did anyone take pics of the packing? If improperly or inadequately packed, it's on the packer.
Do you know if it was packed anything like what Greg Cutshaw recommended on his site?
Fedex will probably try to claim it was inadequately packed; it's on you to show you did pack it for the journey.
Would you have felt comfortable dropping it to the ground from waist height?

Roger, the Big 3 all treat large packages the same. The big stuff doesn't ride the conveyor belts, but go on carts pulled by towmotors. The carts usually have no sides, no suspension and solid tires. At the local terminal and the major hubs, they ride twice: Once from the dock to the sorting area, and from the sort back to the outbound dock. And each outfit will hit two terminals and two hubs. That's 8 cart trips.
The likelihood of falling from these carts ranges from 2% to 7% per trip, and each shipment rides a cart 8 times. That means up to 56% chance of hitting the ground at 10 MPH from a height of three feet.
Again ALL THREE ARE THE SAME.
Either pack your guitar to withstand a three foot drop to concrete, cross your fingers, or try Greyhound.
A friend of mine has worked for all three: UPS, USPS and FedEx. I can't speak for the others, but I know that FXG is experimenting with modifications to the carts. They include nets and removable sides. But it remains that the likelihood of dropping ranges from ten to 56%.
With adequate bracing and padding, they can make the trip fine. But if you don't think you'd be willing to drop it from waist height, it's not ready to go.

Well the problem is my PSG wasn't dropped. It was hit with what Appears to a towmotor. The case was punctured and the steel was damaged to the tune of $400.
That being said, either way... I guess I'm screwed. Thanks for the input.

No. Not screwed. If that's the nature of the damage, then they should pay, and should be made to pay. Stick to your guns.

Sticking to my guns implies a position of power. That might suggest small claims court. That could mean where to file a claim? Big company's have way of filing that suggests a veritable distance to process said small claims. I mean what is the good of travelling to east bygawd to collect $400?

I believe that you can file in your jurisdiction. I'd go their route first. I'll ask my friend who used to work in QA.

By that I assume you mean negotiating. Before this turns into a Laruel and Hardy script, I'll try the methods that big companys hate. First try negotiating follwed by small claims. Courts costs them money they abhor spending particularly for minor claims. Let's see how it goes. I'll let you know how it all works out.

First, file a claim, submit as many before and after pics as you have. Then try their appeals process.

You have to create a customer ID.
Easy peasy! All it will take will be a little time.
Save your packaging. Save documentation. Take pictures.

I had to take FedEx to court. They damaged a new/old Emmons p/p to the tune of $4,800.
They sent an adjuster to look at the guitar and he couldn't even see any damage, wrong! I filed a claim in conciliation (small claims) court and we went before the judge. I had it insured for the full amount and FedEx stated that that wasn't insurance, it was declared value, duh! The judge said: "I'll decide that". And she did. She awarded me the full amount of the claim and the guitar wound up in a warehouse in Utah. I hope somebody got a good deal on it from FedEx.  |

don't let them walk from the claim, time to be aggressive, not assertive, aggressive, everyday. I repeat, every day until it is resolved. This wasn't shipping damage, it was run over by a worker !

well to the contrary, this year I have shipped easily a dozen Instruments, ( 5 or 6 Steels) and received half dozen, not one damaged, not one late, combo of Fed Ex and UPS. Each were packed for safe arrival, incoming and outgoing. I can only recall 1 guitar damaged in the past several years and that was by the Post Office but the guitar was just siting in a box with barely any packing support so the neck was broke. The damage in my mind was to be expected.

| KEEP THE PACKING MATERIAL. If they asked to see it and you don't have it, they can deny the claim. Declared Value protects the carrier "FedX"; Insurance protects the shipper "YOU." FedX is not concerned about law suits; they have staff lawyers that deal with claims everyday. Also, you can file in your state because FedX is required to have a "registered agent" in every state they do business in, which is all 50! And also follow the other, previous advise above, i.e. pix, etc. As well as the consistent follow up so that the easiest way to make you go away is for FedX to give you your $400. |

Dave Carroll has made a huge biz out of his claim that United broke his Taylor guitar. United eventually paid his claim, Taylor gave him a new guitar, then Taylor took him on as a rep/sponsor. He created certain fame, got tons of gigs, did follow up songs/CDs, became a motivational speaker and even wrote a book about his success from his claim with United.
Google "united breaks guitars."
Again, I don't mean to diminish the seriousness of your unfortunate shipping experience. Just know that we all kinda count on you to keep your irons to the fire on this one. I anticipate and look forward to an update on this thread that you prevailed on your claim. Good Luck. |

I just got an email yesterday from FedEx telling me they have delivered my instrument....
the only problem is the address is a closed building- we're not open on Saturdays!!!!

The shipper DID require a signature, didn't s/he?
If signature not required, they'll just drop it off at the door.
