Bruce Kaphan - one of the most talented guys I've ever had the pleasure to work with - has just done another stand-out steel project. He's done the scoring for the film "Pelican Dreams" and once again, he's done some very cool - and different - things on steel, as well as dobro & acoustic guitar.
If anyone's heard his CD "Slider", then you'll know what I'm talking about.

Hey Skip, coming from one of the most talented (and fun to be around) people I've ever worked with, your words are humbling indeed; thank you! You remember the first day we worked together? I was at the console and you were at the piano and you innocently played the arpeggio (from bottom to top) b, d, e, f#, g#, b, e, g#, d#, f#? Until that moment, I wasn't aware that you knew I played pedal steel, and I didn't know that you played pedal steel. Secret handshake completed, we've been fast friends ever since!
And to John— thank you again for contributing to the article I wrote for Recording Magazine all those years ago. Your suggestion of the Sony C37A led me to try one and eventually find and buy one. Most of the time when I record pedal steel, and often on electric guitar, this has become my go-to mic.
And for those of you I haven't yet met (virtually or otherwise) thanks for your kind words as well! What a blast it was working with filmmaker Judy Irving on Pelican Dreams. I love to score films and I especially love it when I can use steel doing so. Often I think the steel calls a little too much attention to itself (who can hear steel and not pay attention?) for use in score, but as much as steel can be a bit of an albatross in this way, in this case, scoring to the unlikely flying machine known as brown pelican, the fit was remarkable. Thanks and kudos to Judy for jumping out onto the edge of the limb with me! |

Hey Bruce,
We're loving the soundtrack CD you sent up. Congratulations - it sounds terrific!
It looks like Pelican Dreams is showing up here in Portland starting this Friday, (November 28th) at Cinema 21. We'll gather up the clan and make sure we catch it this weekend.

Hah... every now and then when I'm on piano & there's a steel player on the date, I'll flash that E9 arpeggio, just to see if they'll pick up on it.
So far, it's pretty much just been you & JayDee.
No surprise there, I guess... |

I picked up Slider when it came out and I've played it for lots of people just to show them what a pedal steel can do. Looking forward to chaecking out the movie works. |
