Another stunning restoration from the hands of Lynn Stafford

Last Friday night, Lynn showed up with this restored 1967 bolt on. Only had time to admire his outstanding work. After some set up, I got to play it Saturday night and what a joy. Lynn has done a fantastic job breathing life into this 40+ year old guitar. So, this is my thank you to Emmons for creating this great guitar, and to Lynn for his care and craftsmanship in rebuilding it.

Check out the new split case from Bob Littleton! Fits like a glove.

Thanks Lynn.

Wow that is a beautiful guitar.
I am just beginning on lap steel and every time I see the underside of a pedal steel my brain goes in to meltdown mode.
That must take a lot of knowledge and skill to restore and keep one of them working properly.

Jim,

Thanks so much my friend, for posting this and for your kind words about my efforts and your "new" Emmons. The first time I heard it after the restoration, I knew you'd be pleased, as it really does exhibit that sought-after Emmons bolt-on tone.

A big thanks also for everyone else's kind remarks. I hope to meet those of you that I haven't had the pleasure someday soon...perhaps at the upcoming Phoenix show.

I'm going to comment again what a beautiful guitar that is. Also, I want to set aside the myth that bolt-ons have tuning problems due to temperature change. I left mine in my unheated garage overnite on purpose and next morning brought it in and it was almost in perfect tune. I let it warm up and it was still really close. As close as any guitar subjected to that kind of temperature difference. It was 32% in my garage and around 24 outside that night.

Can someone refresh my memory with a rough timeline of Emmons pushpull styles?
How long were the bolt ons made?

I always thought that bolt-on Emmons steels had wooden necks. This is the first I can remember seeing one with aluminum necks. I guess they were available either way. Unless Lynn changed this feature. Beautiful work for sure.

Any pushpull with wooden necks will be a bolt-on...regardless of what year it was built.

True, but not all bolt-ons are wooden necks.

Jim,
The '66 Emmons bolt-on has always been my guitar of choice. I have 2 of them . . . this D-10 is my favorite that I've had for almost 17 years.

That's a mighty nice bolt on there too Nick. I've had two bolt ons, one wood neck and one metal neck and they both sounded real close. I found an old recording of my metal neck I had done here at home about 4 years ago and recorded the wood neck and I can't tell difference on recording. I've also tried about 30 other guitars and the P/P is where it's at for me.
Maybe Lynn or someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I think they found out that the tuning issues on a bolt on had a lot to do with how the neck fit into the key head. I think there has to be a small space between them to allow expansion and or shrinkage for the neck. Read that somewhere and it does make sense.

It's a version of:
The first Emmons p/p's were the "wraparounds" 1964-65.
They then made the "bolt-ons" 1966-67
Then the "cut tails" - from around 1968 to 1982...??
Although all wooden necked guitars were produced in the bolt-on style.
I might be out by a year....but it's something like that.

Wood neck bolt ons were made into late 70's also, maybe later.
