Ok, I bought this grey burst NS RICKENBACHER. It's beat up but for me it's a working guitar not a show piece. I have sought one for a long time and would also love a silver hawiian. I have heard about the paper stuffing fron when they were made. I removed the pick up for cleaning out the layer of dust as this must have been a 'wall hanger'. Unfortunately the paper stuffing had no dates but here is some cool pics of what I did find. How about Vicks vapor rub for 27c! Anyway, do I put it all back just for historical sake or stuff it with new paper. I know it does nothing to the value but.... What's everyone's opinion?

If it were mine, I'd definately put the original newspaper back inside. It just lends a little mojo. Just for fun, though, I'd consider putting a current page in there, as well. It might make the next owner scratch his head a little Smile

Yes, vintage paper = vintage tone
modern paper = modern tone

Jeff, I have the exact same greenburst guitar. For what it's worth, the newspaper inside of mine is dated 1932.

I keep the old paper in the guitar and the vintage tone has definitely been preserved!

Any hollow body Ricky that comes through here ... Gets the paper stuffing in a Ziplock ... Gets a couple packs of desiccant thrown in ... And a bunch of terry cloth towels shoved in ...

I use a coat hanger to ram them up into the neck ... Tear up the towels abit or use hand towels ... Stuff the body tight ... Leaving just enough room to get the pickup, etc in ...

The best towels are the Hawaiian vintage from the mid 30's .... Mr. Green

How would it sound with an Al Goldstein magazine crammed in there?

The newspaper looks like late 40s, early 50s. The NS model was made until the early 50s.

I think it's a 48 Doug. Chris, that one is mine, I think Franks must be green. OK, so I'm stuffing it back with Al Goldstein magazine, if I can get one, some vintage Hawiian towels, if I can get em, original newspaper, some new newspaper. Wow this thing will SING!! Might chuck in some Doug Beaumier's tab just to give it it's inherent mojo a kick along. I'll have to do a sound bite for you guys!!! Thanks all, it's been fun!
In all seriousness thank you. Appreciate the tip too Rick!

I'm curious as to why a lap steel needs to be stuffed with paper. Feedback suppression?

I did the same thing Rick did, replaced the newspaper with terrycloth towels and I thought it really helped the tone. My newspaper was dated 1947 and I put it in a ziplock bag and sent it with the guitar when I sold it a few years back.
