I was a pro steeler for years (few gigs left here anymore)and although traditional country music is my favorite music, my all time favorite band for the last 40 years is as far removed from country as you can get. That band is Emerson, Lake, & Palmer. I have seen them 17 times over the years, & their live show is nothing short of spectacular. To me, they have been the #1 major force in music history in the last half century, even though they have only played together once since the '94 tour, at the High Voltage concert on the Isle of Wight. Was seriously considering flying to England to catch the show, but found out too late.

Anybody else have a favorite non-country band?

I listen to a lot of different kinds of music. Back in the day I went to a lot of Grateful Dead shows. Yes, Genesis and Queen were favorites of mine in the 70s. I've also always liked U2 and my daughter turned me on to Muse about ten years ago and I really dig their sound...

I also listen to a lot of classical, especially stuff from the late 19th-early 20th century. Love the Russian composers like Rachmaninov and Scriabin, also a little Claude Debussy too....

Too much music, not enough time!

Just because we play steel, it doesn't mean that's all we listen to. Crying or Very sad
My favorite groups are the Beach Boys, the Crickets, Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention, Fleetwood Mac and the Rolling Stones. Cool

In the eighties, as a kid I listened to Journey, Bonnie Tyler, Genesis featuring Phil Collins, Heart, Cyndi Lauper, and many others. A few of my favorite country bands of the nineties didn't use steel, like Little Texas, Blackhawk, and Diamond Rio. The first country concert I went to didn't use fiddle or steel-it was Blackhawk and Wynonna in May of 1996 in Greenville, South Carolina. Blackhawk featured steel player Paul Franklin on their fourth record, but not live onstage, and Little Texas featured Sonny Garrish on their "First Time For Everything" record, on their song "I'd Rather Miss You". I'm also a fan of The Beach Boys, and other artists in the '50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s

You did ask for bands, but if you're going to include individuals then Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Lonnie Donegan, Buddy Holly, Louis Prima, Ricky Nelson, Johnny Cash ...I could go on all night. Winking

Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Stooges, Grateful Dead: hard to pick one...I'd go with Jimi because of the wide variety of styles present in his body of work, or the Dead for the same reason.

Fourplay with Larry Carlton, and later with Chuck Loeb. I also like the Eagles.

Recently added a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored blue Rose, named the "Blue Bird" to the herd. Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic again that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also added a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks.
