Topic: Sudden Hum In A Nashville 112 |

After several years of trouble-free faithful service, my Nashville 112 suddenly has a noticeable hum. It's present with nothing plugged in but slightly louder with a guitar plugged in.
Being the mechanical/electronics nincompoop that I am, is there anything I can be looking for and trying to fix on my ignorant, uncoordinated own or do I simply send it off for repair without even trying to mess with it?
Anything you all can think of that I should be trying? |

My NV112 developed a hum. My problem was a Molex power connector inside. There are two Molex connectors used in the power supply area. I'm not sure which one it was but reseating (unplugging and plugging back in) them took care of the problem.
Peavey did away with the troublesome Molex connector for the reverb connection but still uses them in the power area.
Have the amp unplugged from the AC power if you do the internal Molex plug reseat. _________________ GFI Ultra Keyless S-10 with pad (Black of course) TB202 amp, Hilton VP, Steelers Choice sidekick seat

Chris...Is the hum present with the reverb dialed completely off? |

Yes, David. The hum is now very slightly louder with the reverb cranked but, up to then, there's no difference with the reverb off or as much as two-thirds of the way up.
Jack - thanks for the tip. I'll give that a try. (Where am I looking for those connectors, by the way?) |

Chris...The chassis will need to be removed to access the connectors that Jack mentioned. Since it will be necessary to unplug the reverb tank from the underside of the chassis before performing that procedure, may want to recheck the unit before proceeding further just to see if that helped at all. May or may not be the problem, but never hurts to isolate any potential possibilities before disassembling the amp. |

More likely, Chris, to block out any risk of hearing me try to sing. |

Try putting a cord from pre-out to pre-in and power amp out to in (or what ever they are labeled, at the day job right now) they are "switched" jacks and the contacts will get dirty with time. Spray cleaner will fix them if that solves the hum and you don't have to take the amp apart.
Jacks problem was the molex connectors, yours might not be.

Hi Jim - Thanks. What am I looking/listening for when I do that? |

If that were the problem spot, then plugging a jumper cable might relieve the hum. It would bypass the otherwise closed contact that was not fully closing because of dirt/corrosion.
I am skeptical of this, though. I don't think of this scenario as a hum producer but more as an intermittent sound or thin sound producer. |

What Jon said about the contacts is correct, and they might not be the problem. I just try everything I can do before I reach for tool's.

I know this is an old post but my 112 recently developed the hum. I tried Jack's solution and while I had the white connectors disconnected I sprayed a little contact cleaner on them and waited a while to make sure all was dry before I reconnected them. I had forgotten about Jim's suggestion or I would have sprayed those jacks while I was at it.
When I first turned the amp on it was quiet for a little bit but then the hum fired up again although it doesn't sound as loud now. It doesn't get louder as I turn the volume up so I guess I could live with it but I know it's not normal so any other suggestions of what I could do?
Thanks, Jay |

Well I did Jack's repair, it's really not that hard to get the amp out, just a few screws, the amp was quiet for a little bit but then the hum started up again.
I then noticed Jim's post so I ran a 1/4" plug in and out of each of the jacks on the front of the amp a few times and viola its quiet and seems to be staying quiet.
Now that's an easy fix. Moral of the story, do a little research and always try the easiest fix first!! |
