I don't want to cast anything negative about the Dallas show in March, but I have a question. My house has come up with a bedbug infestation that we are now treating and the guy has asked me where I have traveled to come home with the critters. The Dallas show is my only trip staying in a hotel. So, could I have gotten them there? I don't know. A quality hotel, I'm told, is not immune. Anyone else have this happen?

I have ever heard of "bringing bed bugs home" unless you took your own linens.
According to the mattress advertisers, we all have bedbugs.

Bill, No, I didn't take my own linens. I can't imagine anyone who would, but, who knows. The pest control company says I could have transported them in my luggage or dirty clothes that we pile up on the floor of the closet. I don't know??

One of my best friends is a retired pest control "authority"! He says that yes,,,you can bring them home in dozens of ways,,,the more "subtle" the contact, the longer it will take for them to manifest themselves in your home. He told me of an infestation in a small town movie theater,,,sit in their chairs for a couple of hours,,,adopt a few of their "pets" to bring home,,,,he says virtually anywhere,,,,AND,,,he says that extreme heat is the only way to get rid of them,,which means moving everything out of your house that won't tolerate 135-150 degrees for 12-24 hours. Those little suckers are bad news!!!!

Which mattress advertisers say "we all have bedbugs"???

Sonny, Your friend agrees with the pest control expects I'm using. They had to have been transported into my home from somewhere. I don't know if it was Dallas, or possibly my health club where I go 3 times a week. It could be there. My home will be fumigated Monday, hopefully to end the problem.

I have been in Pest Control Business since 1978, in Laurel,MS. First bed bug I even saw was in 2008. They have been in New York area since the 1990's.

You could have gotten them from Dallas or alot of other ways.

There are lots of ways to kill them. Heat is very good
But so is freezing them [ $5,000 machine ! ] +
combined OF SPRAY . When the general public says kill them --- THEY MEAN 100 % --- THAT is more fun.
I vacuum + spray + use traps + recommend 2 or 3 treatments 2 to 3 weeks apart. Has worked well for me.

But they are getting more and more everywhere -- even
Alaska.

Thanks Rex, I appreciate your expertise. Honestly, I was reluctant to even post this issue for fear of hurting attendance at future shows. But, you experts say it could have come from many sources. I have already booked my reservation at the Sheratan for next year and I hope I won't take any bugs to Dallas!

NPR suggests if you leave your luggage and clothing in a closed car in the summer for few hours the heat will kill any hitch-hiking bedbugs!

Not a bad idea, John, but it's usually not too hot in March. Darn the luck!

For those who may want to know, here's what we did. First we had to throw out the box spring where the bugs were rampant. Two, we had the room treated by a pest control service. Three we got some special mattress zipper covers for the spring and mattress. They are made as barriers for the bugs and they can't get in (or out). Finally we got some little cups the bed legs sit in and they act as traps for bugs who attempt to crawl up the bed frame. The cups are coated with a slick powder and the bug can crawl in, but then they are trapped.
We are now bug free. Whew!! Thanks everyone.

Here's a bed bug registry you can check to see if there are any reports of bed bugs at specific hotels:
