One way is by using scales that force you to go outside your comfort zone and use slides instead of pedals and levers.

Here is a usable scale addition for your Blues and Country that requires a slides to play the scale and forces you outside of the box.

There are several positions but at first just learn this one position and move it from chord to chord.
This will work for Major and Dom7 chords. For now for the minors just use the minor pentatonic scale for that chord.

The slides are b3>3 from the b3 to the 3 ascending or descending. The 6<>b7 can go either direction.

The scale is a Dom7 six note scale with a b3 replacing the 2 and dropping the 4 of the scale.
I haven’t found this in any books but I’m sure it has been used before or at least something very similar.
I refer to it as a modified Major Blues Scale.

Well here goes
A jpeg of a spreadsheet view of the scale on an E9 neck
To follow will be Jpeg’s of TablEdit of scale and simple licks with midi from the tab for those that don‘t have TablEdit.

I agree with this. As I am a dobro player before pedal steel, I am used to having to travel to find my notes. Having the pedals along with sliding just makes it more fun.

Michael I wish I was a good dobro player but I'm enjoying using this scale on my E9
More later on but for now just the scale.
