Pelican 1700 case/ how much foam 4 flight case?

I recently got the Pelican 1700 for my Williams and it came with 3 slabs of solid foam. If I cut the guitar shape out the middle slab, the top and bottom still prevent the case from closing. It would be better to carve a little into the bottom foam so the the strings, tuners, etc could rest a little lower. It also seems like an area the size of the guitar on the top layer needs to be a bit thinner as well. don't have a good tool to do this though. How you have you Pelican owners worked this out?
