Now I know where 80's metal came from....did Van Halen ever claim Mandrell as an influence?

Barbara got her start as a kid steel guitar whiz on the Town Hall Party in LA back in the late 50's. I believe her teacher was Norm Hamlett. I remember seeing her on the show. She's pretty tiny, so it was amazing to see this little girl play the heck out of the steel.

watching lots of youtube clips of barbara reminds me how talented she is!! wow
in a way, she's the precursor of everything i hate about todays gala entertainment concept: singing, dancing, choreography, ...the difference being that barbara is really talented. she actually sings through it all and incorporates the choreography to include her massive instrumental skills while being cute as pie and humble.
born in '48, she's 65 like me.

i can't imagine the millions of rehearsals she's endured, being the lazy lout that i am.

Another song of Barbara's that I love is her song "Years". She inspires me to be the steel player I am today, with other players

Russ is very close... it's Roy Ayres, who was a great steel player in Pee Wee King's band back in the day.

The steel player in the third picture is not Norm Hamlett. That is Mike "Cookie Monster" Jones who played with
Barbara for years. Great player and super guy.

Just great on the Jerry Byrd song "Slippery Elm."

What is Barbara doing these days? Does she still perform?

Thanks!

I saw a show about Barbara Mandrell's house and she had a music room in it…there was no steel guitar. It would be really great for someone to do an interview with her about her steel guitar experience. I corresponded with some people who talked with her after her last appearance at Scotty's convention, but they didn't talk much with her about her steel playing. My understanding she has pretty much abandoned singing and playing. I looked in her biography and I don't think there was much written about her playing.

Not to put Barbara down at all because she had talent dripping off every inch of her body but I think her steel playing was for entertainment purposes and not so much as to be an accomplished steel player. Even though her technique and sound reflects that of a seasoned pro on steel, I wonder if she was and could play all types of steel guitar. Is there a video anywhere of her playing a ballad?

Henry:

She played for George Jones, Patsy Cline, Joe Maphis, Red Foley, Tex Ritter and Johnny Cash. I don't what else it would take to make her an accomplished steel player. Her playing is exceptional.

Just ran across this clip of Barbara Mandrell tearing it up with a very hot C6 solo on a boogie-woogie along with some mighty talented folks:
"From March 1990, Chet Atkins presents "The World's Most Famous Unknown Band" in a salute to Ralph Emery, and that band is: Glen Campbell, Jerry Reed, Steve Wariner, Roy Clark, Ray Stevens, Ricky Skaggs, Lee Greenwood, Steve Gatlin, Barbara Mandrell, and Irlene Mandrell."

Barbara knocks it out of the park starting at 1:40, smiling all the while. Very Happy
