All,
I have an E66 on my Bud. It sounds good to me but I'm exploring warmer tonalities and wonder what some recommendations would be for a warmer pup. There seems to be some "hollowness" in my upper mids and top end that can be a bit brittle to my ear.

I never liked the the E66. I like the 705, warmer sound.

I had a George L E-66 on my E9 neck and a GL 10-1 on my C6. I much preferred the 10-1 sound, although I never tried it on E9

Glad you posted this! I am in the same boat. I have an e-66 on my shobud and have been wondering if I should try something different or even try to find a shobud pickup to put back in it.

I'd throw a Bud or TrueTone in there. Preferably with a tap.

| A Sho-Bud and an E-66 is a marriage made in Hell IMHO. You might try a 'Lawrence 710' or if you prefer the single coil sound, a Wallace 'Truetone' wound to around 17.5-18K,(either will need to be of narrow mount configuration). |

Hi Guys, It's funny(to me) how one persons trash is someone else's treasure. I have never been a huge fan of e-66's but bought a Sho-Bud pro111 that had a pair on it. On that particular guitar I tried several other pick ups but always went back to the e-66's. It was a perfect match and out of the 30 plus steels I've owned probably in the top 3 tone wise sweet brilliant highs and punchy lows. It was awesome(another one that got away).

I went to an E66 in my Bud, it climbed a few notches over the original pick-up, very full and clear, and it diden't edit the Bud Tone!

Neither recommending or steering away---
I put a BL 912 in my 12 string Pro 1.
Original single coil, even after a rewind, was too microphonic for me and I just avoid SC's.
912 is nice. Works well in there. Not so great that I won't maybe try something else. Already tried an Alumitone (which I liked in a Fessenden) and it sucked in the Bud. I have a 712 which I may try eventually. But if I left the 912 in it, it would be fine. |
