One of the last built 9 pedals and 9 knees $3400. Guitar is in real good shape . Case in solid , but kind of road worn.

Just an unsolicited comment (sorry b0b!) about this and other Derby guitars. I hope I'm not out of line:

I get calls asking if I have an Emmons LeGrande for sale, and I read on the Forum about problems getting Emmonses, etc.

If you're a player looking for an Emmons LeGrande and haven't found one, a Derby is about a close as you can get. Charlie Stepp knew how to build a steel. I've heard and played some great sounding Derby guitars, and you don't see them for sale all that often.

If the seller of this guitar objects to my post, I will gladly remove it. I posted in the spirit of education since Derby's are no longer being made and many here might not know about them. And maybe it will help sell this guitar.

I have edited this post upon receipt of correct information. My apologies.

That's a beautiful Derby Steel you have for sale, well built with excellent workmanship and premium parts. I want to say this with all due respect. The parts that make up Derby guitars were either handmade and finished by Charlie or procured from his own private sources. No parts were ordered from or are "Emmons parts". I make this statement, not from what anyone ever said or told me, including Charlie himself. At one time or the other, I happened to be present whenever every part to his guitars were either made by him or picked up at one of several machine shops in the Louisville area. The Grover keys, George L pickups and legs were sometimes ordered and shipped to his shop as well as occasionally, Thomas cases. There were several other sources used for cases too. Throughout the years, at various times, I personally accompanied Charlie to his sources and suppliers of every guitar part, stayed overnight with him and Margit at their home many, many times as well as drove and accompanied him to many of the various steel guitar shows. Charlie and I even went to the mountains of Haysi, Virginia to actually see and hand pick some of the maple trees before they were cut down to eventually become the finished wood for some of the cabinets. Again, I say this with all due respect, there are no Emmons parts on a "Derby Steel".

Then I stand corrected and you all have my sincere apologies. And as I'm sure you'll agree, this is an excellent guitar and some fortunate player will be very happy with it.

Long story short, I bought a Derby new from Charlie in '02. Later on, I was on the road, it stayed home, & I didn't play it much, so a few years later I sold it. Tone wise, it was hands down the best sounding steel I've ever played. It didn't need any "help". It could do "Hughey Land" with the greatest of ease. And thing is, guys would change out the p'ups in Derbys, but IMO the "Charlie recommended" E-66 was the right p'up for the gtr., both necks.

Maybe it is plumb, but it could be burgundy, or what Charlie called "red".

And again, JMHO, I believed my Derby felt more buttoned down, & better built than the later Emmons' I'd played, & I played an SD-12 PP loafer for over 20 yrs.

Someone's gonna get a well built, great sounding instrument here.

Bump for a very nice "loaded up" Derby Steel. Herb, no apology warranted or necessary whatsoever. It's a common misconception regarding Derby's. I've seen matching seats for this particular color mica, makes for a beautiful combination.

A forum member told me that Charlie Stepp worked at Emmons for 26 years, and that a Derby is about as close to a LeGrande as you can get.

Another vote for the tone and build quality of Derby steels. I've never owned one, but my students have, and they always impressed me. This is a great deal on a loaded one.

Well , I've had several guys looking for a Derby . Most have asked for the Emmons setup , so I decided to change it over ... Now , for someone serious that wants a guitar that has plenty of potential.
