Just curious about how many players out there are using the Zane Beck or Zane Beck Variant tuning? Sure seems to make a lot of sense to me.

I think it would be summed up as putting strings in a more logical position or a simplified Universal tuning. Here you can see a great explanation by Zane King.

His recent videos show him adding a wrist lever that drops the middle G# to F#. Don't know what, if anything, else is on it.
Niels, if you change the subject line to something mentioning Zane King, he might drop in with some contributions.

This is the latest from Zane himself, I am playing around with this tuning just mainly pedal location, but I really like the top four strings. From a guitar players perspective it makes more sense to go up to go up in pitch and to go down to go down in pitch. For me I would rather have a chart than tab ,any day of the week. So I don't care if there isn't much tab available

I find it intriguing, but I think I'd miss the C# unison.
I'm likely to try this on the MSA once the Bud is together.

When I tore my bicep, I took a break.
I'll try to get back on it, but I'm getting remarried on May 24. I suspect "sorry, honey, no honeymoon: I'm working on a steel that week" would fly all that well.

Hey Lane, what do you get on string 3 and 4 when you engage LKL and RKL on the Zane King tuning? What do you get with strings 1 and 2 with RKR? Curious minds want to know????

I don't have the Zane tuning yet. I've not, therefore, monkeyed around with it.
Since you don't have a C# unison, how would you play (just for instance) the Eye For an Eye intro (the Emmons Cross)? Or would you?

You are right Lane, I don't play that song. I will look it up, but I am sure Zane could answer that question. Unfortunately most people on the music scene around here don't know who Buddy Emmons is, and those that do, there numbers are dwindling fast.. Can't say I like that, but that's the way it is.

Well I am playing the Zane Beck tuning with only very minor changes from that on the BMI website. I learned many years ago on a standard D-10, switched to a S-12 tuned to B6/E9 (backwards from the way most people did it) for my last professional playing years in the early 80s. Went back to a D-10 when I started back playing some in the late 90s and a few years ago put the ZB tuning on a spare guitar as I was searching for a 'less is more' approach and couldn't see how an extended E9 was going to quite get me there.
The transition was awkward and if I had been playing regularly would have been impossible and I still hit the wrong lever or strings at times but I really like the tuning and wouldn't give it up now for anything. |

I guess not many folks who are on the forum play this tuning. I am really liking it and have yet to see many short comings. The only thing I added back was a half tone lower on the G#'s.

Thanks Niels for posting this thread. Good conversation for sure. I hope more and more to be able to spend time developing my tuning concepts. Zane Beck was my mentor and such a great man. His contributions to the instrument will forever be experienced.

Glad you could make it Zane- I think anyone starting out would benefit from this tuning. It really is a unified tuning. I think the thought process of now I am playing E9 and now B/6 is unnecessary and wasteful. Having that 6 on an open tuning is really nice. I can only imagine all the things Dan has found in 35 years with this tuning. And thanks Zane for all the help in starting out with this tuning.

Niels If you are interested in my subtle changes to the original ZB tuning, do a search for 'Z Chop Job' where I show the results of Paul Redmond's work on my old 82 Zum S-12.
Also the last few years I have been playing it as an 11 string leaving off the low B, thats bass player territory anyway and I am not working up any solo steel stuff. |

I played Zane Beck's Tuning for 4 Years and absolutely loved it. If I didn't play the Jet10 tuning I would be playing Zane Beck's tuning. I think the biggest drawback for a lot of guys is grabbing strings 3,5,6 instead of the standard 3,4,5 at least that is what I was told when folks tried the tuning.
I think the magic in both Zane's and Julian's tunings is the C# in the open tuning. It opens up so many opportunities for progressions, as well as, chords.
Dan Rollins and Zane King have demonstrated the possibilities of the tuning.
